Will Lankshear's overriding feeling at great Middlesbrough start and his next ambition
Will Lankshear has three goals in two games for Middlesbrough
Will Lankshear admits his overriding feeling is one of relief, after starting so impressively at Middlesbrough.
The young striker joined Boro from Tottenham this summer and has hit the ground running, with three goals in two games to help Kim Hellberg’s side beat Wrexham in the cup and win their first league game.
His latest goals came in Saturday’s opening-day league win over Lincoln, as he scored twice to help his side come from behind.
It’s been a really encouraging start from the 21-year-old, who didn’t hide from the fact that arriving for an initial fee of £7 million meant he felt the pressure of the expectation.
Speaking after the game, Lankshear admitted: “I can't lie, it absolutely is a massive relief. Coming in for a fee, there's always going to be expectation.
“But I work hard every single day, listen to the manager and see where it takes you. It's really nice when you've been training on something all week and it comes off. I'm really pleased about that.
“The first one was instinctive and my reaction time was really good, I'm really pleased with that one.
“The second one, I thought my movement was really good. I've been working on that all week. We've been doing a lot of in and around the box movement and finishing.”
And on his next ambition, having had enough opportunities in both games so far, he continued: “I've been dying for a hat-trick. I came quite close at Sheffield Wednesday with Oxford last season.
“I'm dying for that hat-trick ball but I'll take the two and hopefully it will come. I had about seven chances today so I probably should have had a hat-trick!”
His brace was part of a great weekend for the Lankshear family. Older brother Alex, a left-back who spent last season at Boston United, scored on his Gateshead debut to help Lee Cattermole win for the first time as a manager in a competitive game.
“I'm absolutely delighted for him. I'm buzzing!” he said. “My brother has worked extremely hard. It's not been easy for him but he's got the mentality and we as a family absolutely believe in him.
“We think the world of him. As a footballer, he's making his own journey and I'm absolutely delighted for him.
“I know Lee Cattermole is the manager there. I think he's a Middlesbrough fan and worked with the 18s here, so he's in safe hands.
“It was a big decision for him but with me being up here I felt like I could give him a home and help him. I'll hopefully see him really progress.
“It's a big decision moving clubs, it's tough moving away from home. He's delighted to be there, he'll be absolutely buzzing.”
Lankshear revealed that their parents split the responsibilities, with their father at the Riverside to watch Will bag his brace, while their mother was on Tyneside to watch Alex.
