OXNARD, Calif. -- Future Hall of Fame pass rusher Von Miller is coming home, expected to join the Dallas Cowboys on a one-year deal, a source told ESPN.
Miller, who attended DeSoto (Texas) High School before heading to Texas A&M, is entering his 15th season and has more sacks (138.5) than any other active player.
Miller hinted on social media more than a few times in the offseason about joining the Cowboys, even posting a picture of himself in a Cowboys uniform.
Now 37, Miller will be asked to be part of a pass-rush rotation that features Rashan Gary, Donovan Ezeiruaku, first-round pick Malachi Lawrence and potentially Sam Williams, James Houston and Marist Liufau.
Miller recorded nine sacks last season for the Washington Commanders -- his highest total since 2021 when he finished with 9.5 while splitting time with the Denver Broncos and Los Angeles Rams.
A first-round pick of the Broncos in 2011, Miller has been named to the Pro Bowl eight times and has been a first- or second-team All Pro seven times. He was the NFL's Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2011 and twice finished second in Defensive Player of the Year voting (2012, 2016).
At the start of training camp, Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones hinted at possibly adding a significant piece to the defense. Last week, the team signed defensive tackle Quinnen Williams to a three-year, $105.9 million extension and is now adding Miller.
While Miller might not be the every-down player he was with the Broncos, the Cowboys believe he can be a difference-maker for new coordinator Christian Parker.
Parker and Miller were together in Denver for parts of one season before the pass rusher was dealt to Los Angeles, where he won his second Super Bowl ring. Miller was the MVP in Denver's Super Bowl 50 win in the 2015 season, pairing with former Cowboys Hall of Famer DeMarcus Ware.
Miller viewed Ware as a much-needed mentor in his time with the Broncos and perhaps he can serve the same for the young Cowboys pass rushers.
After half a season with the Rams, Miller signed with the Buffalo Bills as a free agent. He played three years with the Bills, though two of them were impacted by a torn ACL that caused him to miss the final five games of the 2022 season and the first four in '23.
