Leeds United are reportedly interested in signing Levante striker Carlos Espi, who is likely to leave the La Liga club very soon. I think most Leeds fans are in agreement that Dominic Calvert-Lewin is more than good enough to start for us next season. However, there’s also an understanding that United could do with signing cover and competition for him. Leeds can’t really afford to continue pinning all of our success on Calvert-Lewin having a second successive injury-free season. As good as he’s been, that’s too big a risk. Leeds United interested in signing Levante’s £21.4m-rated striker Carlos Espi On Sunday, it was reported by Matteo Moretto that Levante striker Carlos Espi was set for an unnamed Premier League transfer. Prior to that, I had already put out an opinion that the 21-year-old Spaniard would be a very good option for Leeds to provide cover to Calvert-Lewin. Standing at 6ft4in, the striker netted 11 goals to drag Levante out of the relegation zone on goal difference. Now, the YEP’s Graham Smyth reports that United are indeed one of the clubs interested in signing Espi this summer. Although, Leeds’ interest is just that so far, there’s been no formal approach at the time of writing. Importantly, the talented Spaniard is amongst a list of strikers. Essentially, it confirms that Leeds are in the market for a new forward to shoulder some of Calvert-Lewin’s burden. Leeds would be likely to pay €25million (£21.4million) to sign Espi, due to a release clause in his contract. A move could materialise soon, wherever Espi ends up, as his club omitted him from pre-season recently with a transfer in mind. Carlos Espi would be a superb signing for Leeds United this summer Espi is the exact profile of striker signing Leeds need this summer. Calvert-Lewin is that peak-age striker that is great for here and now. That said, we need someone who can step up to the plate for years to come. And, Espi at 21 is a savvy investment that can learn from Calvert-Lewin. Like any striker of his age, Espi is by no means the finished article. So, he’d need patience before becoming a star, but we’re in a great position to be able to develop a striker like him. I’m not overly confident Espi moves to Leeds. There’s a lot of interest in him, and he won’t be a guaranteed starter here, but this would be a terrific move.
