The status report remained the same for the vast majority of Pittsburgh Steelers players inflicted by minor injury between the training-camp practices of Saturday and Sunday.
There were a couple of notable exceptions, however.
Veteran safety DeShon Elliott’s participation was by all appearances full on Sunday at Saint Vincent College. This is notable because Elliott to this point of camp had been sitting out the team portions of practice and taking part only in individual drills and walkthrough-paced periods as he continued to ramp back up following recovery from surgery resulting from a knee/hamstring injury suffered midway through last season.
Elliott joined the Steelers in 2024 and signed an extension late last summer but was limited to only five games last season.
“His leadership skills and his physicality showed up today, I know that,” defensive coordinator Patrick Graham said after practice Sunday. “He’s always active in the meetings. He’s active bringing the guys together. He’s a solid communicator, and that’s what we need at that position.”
Elliott took first-team reps at safety during 11-on-11 play.
Wetjen OK
Rookie receiver and return man Kaden Wetjen was a full participant at practice a day after he left practice early while having his lower left leg/foot getting attended to.
The team’s top return specialist, Wetjen had a 74-yard reception in addition to a touchdown catch during the Steelers’ preseason-opening win against the Green Bay Packers on Thursday.
With the Steelers down their top two wide receivers (DK Metcalf and Michael Pittman Jr.) because of mild injury, Wetjen generally headed the second-team unit at the position Sunday at practice.
No change in status
First-round pick Max Iheanachor headlines the list of others who have missed practice time because of injury who remained out Sunday. Iheanachor has missed more than a week since suffering an apparent neck/shoulder injury.
Also still not practicing are safety Jaquan Brisker, cornerback Brandin Echols, receiver Brandon Smith, defensive tackle Sebastian Joseph-Day and defensive back Israel Mukuamu. Mukuamu suffered his injury during Saturday’s practice, appearing to be favoring his lower right leg or ankle area.
