Marius Muller can become 'cult hero' as Aberdeen boss reveals reason behind mask The German joined the Dons from Wolfsburg this summer and has since become the new No. 1 for the Granite City side, winning every game he has played so far this season. Aberdeen manager Stephen Robinson reckons his masked hero can become a cult hero after an impressive start at Pittodrie. Marius Muller was signed from Wolfsburg earlier this summer, and the experience German has since been thrown into the No. 1 spot. Ousting Dimitar Mitov, the 33-year-old has won every game he has featured in so far, making some big saves to help Aberdeen get off to the perfect start. Muller however has become a distinctive member of the squad for his protective mask, which he wears because of previous injuries, writes Record Sport. Robinson explained: "I believe he had a few concussions in a row and then wore the mask. It was a few years ago, but he has just stuck with it. "He just feels it is the right thing to do. He trains in the mask everyday as well. He does it for protection and feels very comfortable in it. "Goalkeepers are always diving at people’s feet and getting plenty of physical contact, so it makes sense for him to wear it. I can see it getting a bit of a cult status and people walking about with those masks." Sporting director Lutz Pfannenstiel identified the experienced German from his own time in the Bundesliga. He had flagged Muller up before the end of the season. Aberdeen decided to move, with Mitov considering his options and a possible summer exit. Muller has come in and made a big impact on and off the park. "He is a big boy," his manager insisted. "He is very good with the ball at his feet as well. It gives us another element or string to our bow, as they say, to play out. Marius also gives us the ability to play over the top as well. "He has also shown what a fantastic shot stopper he is. Look at the Queen’s Park game, he made three saves in a row and that is what we brought him in to do." The 33-year-old keeper has plenty of experience. Muller has got plenty of top-level experience via his spells at Kaiserslautern, RB Leipzig, Schalke 04 and VfL Wolfsburg. He also has four years in Switzerland with FC Luzern. Robinson admitted his influence is important to his side. Robinson explained: "We have quite a young squad. We have a lot of young, energetic players. You don’t play in the Bundesliga that many teams unless you are a good player. "He is a winner. He has come here to win things. He has come here to push himself and to play. He was No. 2 at Wolfsburg and wasn’t happy with that, which I like. "Some players can sit at club, take their money and play every now and again with no pressure. In fairness, to Marius, he wants the pressure that comes with playing for Aberdeen FC. I am delighted for him." Robinson has made 12 signings this summer. He is looking to add further but before then he needs to get some of his fringe players out. The latest one has been Chris Cadden from Hibs. Robinson stated: "We have to have people go out first of all - I think that's very clear." Kusini Yengi has come back into the fold and has been given a squad number after his loan in Japan with Cerezo Osaka. He added: "Everyone here's fighting for a place. At the moment, Kusini won't be in the squad tomorrow - he's not fit enough to be in the squad. He hasn't played any football. He's had a long-term injury. "He’s only just started back training again, so he won't be involved this week or the next coming weeks. But everyone's got an opportunity. If they're good enough, they'll play. "People say, give people opportunities. You have an opportunity every day in training. Every day you train, every day you walk through that door you've got an opportunity to impress the staff. So Kusini will be no different than anybody else." His new-look squad has hit the ground. They have won their opening four games in the Premier Sports Cup and followed that up with a late comeback win in their Premiership bow against Hearts. The Dons head to Dundee in the league this Saturday and then face the Dark Blues again the following weekend at Pittodrie in the Premier Sports Cup.
