A highly rated member of Roberto De Zerbi’s coaching staff has landed a promotion with the Sweden national team while continuing his role at Tottenham Hotspur. Tottenham Hotspur will kick off the new Premier League campaign later this week, hoping to put the disappointment of back-to-back 17th-placed finishes firmly behind them, with Roberto De Zerbi now preparing for his first full season in charge. Spurs have already spent £237m on six first-team arrivals this summer, while more additions are expected before the transfer window closes, with Savinho and Cody Gakpo among the names still being pursued. Several experts of the game have backed Tottenham to bounce back next season with De Zerbi now at the helm, having played a major role in helping Spurs avoid relegation after taking over last season. However, there is another key figure behind the scenes who deserves plenty of credit for the club’s recent progress. Andreas Georgsson transformed Tottenham’s set piece fortunes Tottenham were never known for being particularly strong from set pieces. If anything, the opposite was true, with the club heavily criticised for their weakness in that area, particularly during the 24/25 season. Last summer, former Sweden international centre-back Andreas Georgsson left his head coach role at Lillestrom to join Thomas Frank’s staff as a set-piece coach, and he completely transformed Spurs in that department. Out of the total 76 goals Tottenham scored in all competitions last season, 27 of those were from set pieces alone; their highest in the last decade. They were just as impressive defensively, with only Arsenal conceding fewer goals from set pieces in the Premier League last season. That perhaps explains why the 44-year-old remained in the dugout even after Frank and his short-lived successor Igor Tudor both left along with their respective coaching staffs, with the Swede now working as an assistant under De Zerbi, who has described Georgsson as ‘top’. Georgsson also joined Graham Potter’s Sweden staff in October last year and was part of the coaching team that guided the national side to the round of 32 at the World Cup. He has now been rewarded with a promotion, with the Swedish Football Association announcing him as the team’s new assistant coach. Andreas Georgsson opens up on Sweden promotion Speaking after taking on his new role with Sweden, Georgsson said: “Being able to represent the men’s national team is a great honour for me and my family. “I feel that the collaboration with the coaching staff and players has grown very strong in a short time, and I will do everything I can to help the team develop and reach Euro 2028.” It is certainly a well deserved promotion for Georgsson, and there will be plenty of interest in what he can bring to Tottenham next season. Spurs have added players such as Sandro Tonali and Andy Robertson, both of whom have a strong reputation from set pieces, while James Maddison is also back from injury. That could give Georgsson even more to work with as Tottenham look to build on the improvements made in that area last season.
