Amy Hunt completes unprecedented European quadruple at Birmingham 2026
The sprinter capped off a superb week with a fourth gold medal.
Great Britain’s Amy Hunt won an unprecedented fourth gold at Birmingham 2026 while Dina Asher-Smith made history in the mixed 4x100 metres relay.
Asher-Smith is now the most successful and decorated European athlete after Sunday night’s win at Alexander Stadium saw her claim an eighth gold and 11th medal in all.
Hunt, meanwhile, capped off a sensational week by adding the mixed relay title to her 100m, 200m and women’s relay victories from earlier in the week.
Zharnel Hughes, also part of the quartet, became the first British male to win six European golds.
Jeremiah Azu, who won 100m silver earlier in the week, led off the team as they set a new European record of 39.97 seconds.
Germany took the silver, with Spain claiming the bronze.
Hunt’s four golds at a single European championship beat the previous best of three golds and a silver, recorded by legendary Dutch sprinter Fanny Blankers-Koen in 1950.
She told BBC Sport: "Oh my gosh, I am over the moon. I think to finish it off with some of my best friends in the sport.
"Me and Jeremiah have the same birthday, so we're kind of twins. To do it all together is incredible.
"The first time we did that changeover was an hour ago in warm-ups. Look how smooth it was. Such professionals.
“When you're queuing for a roller-coaster, and you're seeing the drops, but when you get off you want to do it all again. I loved it."
“It was so scary, but I love the new opportunity. End of the week, we needed some newness. To do something brand new was amazing."
Asher-Smith said: "I was terrified. I was absolutely terrified. When that gun was going I was like, 'Dina, just relax'.
"When I gave that baton to Zharnel (Hughes) I was so happy. I can't lie. I was like 'get this out of my hand'.
It's good to get to try something new. The more we do it, the more we learn the tips and tricks of the event to keep running faster."
