Burton Albion are looking at striking a deal to sign Kilmarnock defender George Stanger.
The Brewers are looking for new defensive options heading into their ninth-straight League One season, and have already done some strengthening in the form of the permanent signing of Curtis Tilt from Bradford City.
Bowyer Eyes New Defender
Now, according to Scott Burns of the Daily Record, Albion could now move for a new central defender in the form of New Zealand international George Stanger.
The 25-year-old played a regular role in Kilmarnock’s Scottish Premiership campaign last season, featuring 20 times in the top flight in his debut season after moving on a free transfer from Ayr United.
He played all 90 minutes in the Rugby Park club’s opening match of this season as they fell to St. Johnstone in a 4-3 loss and also played three times in their League Cup group stage, in which Killie qualified for the next round.
Stanger is in the final year of his contract with Kilmarnock, but Neil McCann will not entertain any offers unless a suitable transfer fee is tabled by any suitors 12 months on from his arrival amid interest from Colchester United and Gillingham.
Burton have looked at signing other defenders this window to complement Tilt, with reports linking them to Kieran Ngwenya, who is now on course to join Rotherham United as a free agent.
Albion Face Big Ask
With Gary Bowyer looking to shake up his Burton Albion defence ahead of the new season, their eyes have landed on George Stanger as a potential option to recruit.
Having lost both Alex Hartridge to Plymouth Argyle and Jasper Moon to Port Vale at the start of the window, the Staffordshire club need to find alternative options to support Curtis Tilt.
The New Zealander may be tempted into making a move in a search for more minutes, but with the opening of the Scottish season, Stanger is already playing a large role in Neil McCann’s side which could only make him an even more important figure in the Kilmarnock squad.
With Albion not having the largest of budgets to contend with for transfers, a move for a soon-to-be out-of-contract defender could be the ideal path forward, but given the demands the Ayrshire club may ask for, it may be too much for Burton to strike a deal.
