He found the back of the net and assisted, but he just looked more lively with the ball at his feet than he has for a good while. There was a bit more of a spring in his step, and he looked more confident. Losers In terms of the starting XI, no one came out in a negative light here. Everyone played well and took another step towards proper levels of fitness, though there could have been more involvement from Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz, ideally. In the earlier game, there was a missed chance for Federico Chiesa and Harvey Elliott to impress, but they were some way off being in contention to start at Newcastle anyway. The concern is the drop-off to the second choices; there remains a fortnight in which to do more business in the transfer market. Player ratings Alisson Becker (7). His distribution, though he didn't have to do anything that spectacular, was good, but the Brazilian wasn't called into action much in terms of saves. Got down well at the near post around half an hour in, but he would have expected to keep that out. Jeremie Frimpong (7). Still yet to fully convince as a right-back option, this was his best performance in pre-season so far, putting in some good blocks and tackles. He seemed to enjoy having Jacquet there with him in the first half and was quick enough to ensure that he was well-positioned both in defense and attack. Jeremy Jacquet (9). Playing for the first time in a Liverpool jersey, the young Frenchman was confident, strong, and excellent both in possession and in the tackle. Early days, of course, but he looks to have a similar profile to Ibrahima Konate, but with a bit more quality when it comes to his passing. It was only 45 minutes, but The Kop wasn't singing his name without justification. This was a really good start. Virgil van Dijk (7). A couple of passes went astray, but the Liverpool captain largely did well. Marshaled those around him, with Jacquet called into action more frequently and therefore able to impress the most. Milos Kerkez (7). He was popping up very narrowly at times, which is unusual. There is still more to come from him offensively, but he was solid enough with his defensive work. Once again, the Dutchman was gliding around and doing his usual stuff in the center, without needing to over-exert himself. The midfielder is a class act, but he was more understated than stand-out here. Dominik Szoboszlai (7). Looking at home in the deeper role, the Hungarian was powering around the pitch as usual. Between him and Gravenberch, there were not too many gaps in the middle, which is something that needs to continue. Rio Ngumoha (6). Operating down the right flank, it feels like we might see a fair bit of them there in the months to come. When he went around the outside, it looked promising, but when he came back onto his weaker left foot, he got crowded out. Florian Wirtz (6). The German scored last week and had his moments here, but still needs to be more consistent with what he offers in the final third. There were flashes, but there needs to be more. Cody Gakpo (8). Still of interest to Tottenham this summer, it remains to be seen exactly what happens before the transfer window comes to a close. Here, the Dutch forward was very direct and beat his man much more often than has been the case of late. He took the opening goal really nicely and set up the second too. Alexander Isak (6). If Liverpool is to have any chance of doing anything this summer, then Isak is going to have to hit the ground running. A lovely effort was deflected onto the post early on but the Swede would have wanted to be more involved later on. Substitutes Ronald Araujo (7). On for Jacquet at half-time, with the plan always having been to give them 45 minutes each, the Uruguayan slotted straight in and did his job well. First impressions? For one thing, he's massive, which should help in terms of the make-up of the modern Premier League. Lewis Koumas (6). On for Ngumoha and making his second appearance of the day, the Wales international played off the right and injected some fresh legs when Como was having a decent spell. Some really nice touches, but just lacking something. Victor Munoz (6). Another winger playing his second game of the day, the Spaniard almost tripped over the ball when he came on. Not as involved here as he was in the earlier fixture. Trey Nyoni (6). Finishing a really strong summer in style, the 19-year-old midfielder slotted straight into the game. Everything he does just looks so simple, and he is ready for more. Will Wright also came on but too late to earn a rating.
