Leeds United are closing in on a club record deal for James Trafford. The Whites reportedly agreed a deal with Manchester City worth £40million plus add-ons for the 23-year-old. Trafford has now taken another step towards joining Leeds, with Beren Cross reporting that the goalkeeper has completed his medical ahead of his move to West Yorkshire. So with Trafford on the brink of signing, Daniel Farke’s comments regarding the goalkeeper position are more interesting than ever. “Top-class” goalkeeper is a must according to Daniel Farke In a recent interview with Men In Blazers, Farke had a lot to say regarding the goalkeeper position at Leeds in the midst of Trafford’s imminent move. “There are definitely a few very important positions in football,” Farke said. “You need a top striker, top centre-backs; it’s important to have someone in the middle of the park who is there with top quality. “A strong No.1 goalkeeper is also in this role. Your core bones in a team have to be strong. You can take a few more risks on the winger position, but the No.1 goalkeeper is crucial because he saves you points.” Farke continued, “Especially as a side who is just on the way to establishing themselves at Premier League level. You need at least a really good No.1, maybe even top-class; this is what all clubs in our position are aiming for, and so it’s really important.” In Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Ethan Ampadu, Anton Stach, Joe Rodon, Jaka Bijol and Tarik Muharemovic, Farke looks to have that strong spine he is looking for. Trafford would be the final piece of this puzzle, ticking all the boxes we need from a new goalkeeper. Farke has not exactly been blessed with reliable shot-stoppers during his tenure at Leeds. Karl Darlow, Illan Meslier and Lucas Perri have all had performances that will have infuriated the manager. The Englishman would already start for a good chunk of the Premier League, but after having a couple of years to develop at Elland Road, this number will only continue to increase. I don’t want to jinx anything, but I just cannot see a world in which Trafford is not an instant success at Leeds. We’ve been starved for quality in the goalkeeping area for decades at this point. Trafford has an abundance of that quality that we crave. Farke’s comments show that he is sick and tired of having to have liabilities in between the sticks for Leeds. But when Trafford signs, this will no longer be an issue.
