Arsenal produced a brilliant display to beat Manchester City 3-0 in the Community Shield at the Principality Stadium on Sunday.
The victory is the biggest margin of victory in the tournament since the Gunners beat City by the same scoreline in 2014.
Riccardo Calafiori broke the deadlock inside 23 seconds, scoring the earliest goal in the competition in 58 years.
Kai Havertz doubled the lead, registering his seventh goal involvement against City before Martin Odegaard sealed the triumph three minutes after the interval.
City dominated possession and forced goalkeeper David Raya to make four saves. Yet, the English champions were the better side throughout the encounter.
Despite the performance, former Everton winger Pat Nevin believes Arsenal still need one more signing to be the league’s pace-setters.
He told the BBC: “Martin Odegaard looked back to his very, very best and it’s like a new, brilliant signing. Eze back up and running, like a new signing as well. Madueke had a number of injuries last season, Kai Havertz as well.
“They probably only need one more signing and they are, by some distance, the team to beat this season.”
The north London club are expected to be busy before the end of the transfer window, with the club looking to sign a centre-back and another attacker.
William Saliba’s injury and the possible departures of Gabriel Martinelli and Gabriel Jesus have raised the need to strengthen those positions.
Nonetheless, Arsenal’s display against City shows that they are ready to defend the Premier League title.
The Gunners did not start Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice. Yet, they looked miles ahead of City.
With several potential title rivals having changed managers, Arsenal are overwhelming favourites to win the league.
