Dan Burn has echoed Newcastle United head coach Matthias Jaissle’s warning that the side will not be at their peak levels for the Premier League opener against Liverpool. It’s a week until Newcastle’s season gets underway at St James’ Park after a disruptive summer that has seen them lose several key players and change manager. Burn has been back at the club just a week but has already been confirmed as the new captain and led the team out at St James’ Park for the final pre-season friendly match against Strasbourg. The 34-year-old played the opening 45 minutes as William Osula put the home side in front. Strasbourg levelled in the closing stages and ended up winning the Visit Malta trophy on penalties. “Yeah, I enjoyed that game, it was good to be back, especially playing with Fabi [Schar],” Burn said afterwards. “I know Fabi's been out for a long time and I've played a lot of games with Fabi, so positive signs for me I think. “When we played well with structure, when we scored the goal, I felt like we did well. There's still going to be things that we need to learn and learn quickly going into the season with the new manager and the philosophy he wants to play, but yeah, looking forward to the Liverpool game.” Jaissle admitted after the 3-1 defeat to Everton at Murrayfield that Newcastle would not peak against Liverpool, but Burn still feels ready for the new season despite having just 45 minutes of football under his belt at club level. “Very ready,” he said. “Listen, we're not going to peak against Liverpool, I think the manager said that. It'll take time to embed the things that he wants to do, because there's always differences with managers and the way that they want to do things. “We've probably not had as much training time as we would have liked, so we've got a good week this week, which I'm sure we'll learn a lot. But from the two games that I've seen this weekend, I'm confident that we'll be ready for Liverpool, and I don't think you need any motivation for a Liverpool home game, for either us or the city, so yeah, looking forward to it.” Burn is set to lead Newcastle out as captain for the first time next weekend after he was appointed as Bruno Guimaraes’ successor by Jaissle. “Very proud to be named club captain,” Burn added. “I said it's something that, some things you can't really dream of when you're a kid, but for me that was a dream from very early on to be captain of Newcastle, so very grateful for the opportunity and looking forward to leading the lads this season. “I've been part of the leadership group a long time, and just because I wasn't wearing the armband, I still felt as if I was a captain of sorts. “So, yeah, much the same, I try to lead by example, and we've got a lot of a younger team this year and some new players, so I'm trying to help them as much as possible and make them realise what it is to be a footballer for Newcastle.”
