Leeds United rounded off their pre-season preparations in style. United defeated Bundesliga side Augsburg 4-0 at Elland Road in the Whites’ last friendly game. Anton Stach, Tarik Muharemovic, James Justin and Lukas Nmecha all managed to get themselves on the scoresheet in what was an impressive performance against solid opposition. The team Daniel Farke fielded will likely be the one we see in our first Premier League game against Nottingham Forest next Saturday. Justin took the place of the injured Gabriel Gudmundsson. Whilst Brenden Aaronson started out on the left as Noah Okafor continues to work his way back to full fitness, these were the only notable changes from our strongest team. However, there was another Leeds star who did not feature at all against Augsburg due to injury. And it is this injury which could see him remain at Elland Road for next season. Willy Gnonto misses Augsburg clash due to hamstring injury During our game against Manchester United in Dublin earlier this week, Willy Gnonto picked up a hamstring injury, per Beren Cross. No timeframe has been given regarding the winger. But the hope is that he will be back as soon as possible. As a result, Gnonto watched on from the stands as United thrashed Augsburg. At the start of August, it was reported that both Gnonto and Joel Piroe would likely be moved on this summer. Things look to be heating up regarding Piroe’s potential exit. However, there is a chance that Gnonto’s injury could derail any prospect of him moving away. Inadvertently, Gnonto’s hamstring injury could end up saving his Elland Road career. It could give the Italian one final chance to impress Farke in the upcoming season. If Gnonto does stay, it remains to be seen whether the 49ers could still bring another attacker through the door. Selling Gnonto would surely go a long way in funding a potential replacement, you would imagine. Daniel Farke has no excuses regarding Willy Gnonto next season Personally, I was unsure as to whether Farke was the right man to lead us into the Premier League last summer. Thankfully, the German proved me wrong and did an exceptional job. However, one subject I continually disagree with him on is his treatment of Gnonto. I get that Farke prefers Aaronson for his work rate out wide. The American is clearly not as talented as Gnonto. However, in the Premier League, when we will be under the cosh, last season proved that Aaronson is a useful player to have. But I simply cannot accept Gnonto being behind Dan James in the pecking order. This will never make sense to me. For me, next season, Okafor and Harry Wilson should be our starting wingers when fit. Aaronson should be subbed on if we need to see a game out. Gnonto should be subbed on if we need a goal. James should then be thrown on later as and when he is needed. But I think we all know by now with Farke that if both Gnonto and James are fit, it is the Welshman who will ultimately end up playing more minutes next season.
