Arsenal claimed the Community Shield for the 18th time in the club’s history with an emphatic 3-0 victory over Manchester City in Cardiff. Goals from Riccardo Calafiori, Kai Havertz and Martin Odegaard sealed a convincing win and the first piece of silverware of the new season. Here’s what the managers, players, pundits and stattos made of the action… Mikel Arteta on the manner of the win… I’m obviously extremely happy with the performance, with the results and winning the first trophy. We talked about the desire that we have to start the season [well] and to show ourselves how much we want it. And I certainly saw a lot of positive things there against our top opponent. I think [the performance e] is down to the preparation that we’ve done in pre-season, to the decisions that the boys have taken after the World Cup, to continue to get prepared, to come [back] early, because they wanted to be part of this. They really wanted to win the competition, because it’s something that we earned last year: the chance to play against City here. And I’m very impressed in the manner that we played, especially in the manner that we competed. So, that’s the standard for us, and if we drive the standards at this level, I’m sure that we’re going to be really, really competitive. I think after the goal, the reaction was quite good before they scored the second one, we had three or four chances to score and draw the game but unfortunately we conceded the second one and it became more complicated. We have many things to work [on]. The season’s just started so there are many things we need to do better but even when we win games there are things we need to do better. In the end, this is just the start, and the most important thing is we’re already looking forward and we will be ready for our next game. I joined midway [in pre-season]. This is the third game since I have been back. The feeling has been good. Today is frustrating, and it is a final that we all wanted to win. If there is a lesson to be learnt in the final, let it be this one, as there’s a lot more coming. It is a positive energy. The feeling of a lot of work to put into. It’s part of any transition for things to be not so perfect in the beginning. You need to push through, you need to communicate, and make things work between us. But at the same time, we ask him to do the defensive duties and he does what he has to do. We ask him because he’s capable of doing it. He knows how to do it. And if we maintain him fit and available with that physical condition, he’s a top player. Not all the players can see these kinds of lines. I always try to give options and Myles gave me the perfect ball. I think it’s 70% him and 30% me. So I’m sure this year, if we can maintain him fit and available, and with the players around him, we’re going to see a very different Martin. And I sense from the first day that he joined that he has something else on the belly that he wants to prove and show because the team needs it as well. I get along really well with him. We’re really different. If I was the manager, I would have been happy, to be honest. At the same time, it’s not easy to pick the right one. I was so happy to play this final. It was my first final that I started. I’m really happy. I’ve been trying to persuade the Premier League and the [other] clubs to be able to extend the number of players that we can have, especially the outfield players in the squad, because we play more and more games and the load is unreal. To not give the chance to those players to be here to participate, because maybe the game demands the qualities of one of those players, and to not have them available is just a shame. It’s the most difficult part of the job. But there’s nothing to do with that [transfers]. It’s just a fact that we can bring 18 outfield players and we believe that for today’s game, these were the options that we needed, especially with the physical condition of certain players. But the gap between the two teams, it was quite stunning to see. Man City, their body language, the players, the manager, it looks a bit lifeless as a group. It’s very early days of course and Man City have lost I think four of the last five Community Shield finals, so we shouldn’t look too much into it. But the performance, the manner, Arsenal have made a real statement of intent with that performance. And again, it’s early for Arsenal. But the biggest problem for Arteta now is who does he pick?
