Celtic are heading back to Ibrox in cup competition after being drawn away to Rangers in the quarter-finals of the Premier Sports Cup. For the second season running, the Hoops will have to negotiate a knockout tie on the other side of Glasgow after last season’s memorable Scottish Cup quarter-final victory at the same venue. The tie will be played on the weekend of September 12/13, with the exact date and kick-off time still to be confirmed. It also means Celtic and Rangers are set to meet twice in the space of little more than a week. It is a repeat of the unusual situation Celtic faced last season when consecutive Glasgow Derbies arrived in different competitions. Last season’s Scottish Cup visit to Ibrox certainly wasn’t a classic. Celtic had to dig in through a largely lacklustre performance before eventually getting the job done on penalties. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was among those who converted from the spot as Celtic won the shootout and progressed, and ultimately winning the Scottish cup. What followed after the final penalty became almost as big a talking point as the game itself. Celtic supporters spilled onto the pitch to celebrate the victory before Rangers supporters also entered the playing area to attack jubilant Celtic fans, with ugly scenes breaking out. It was a chaotic end to an already tense afternoon at Ibrox. That experience inevitably puts the issue of the Celtic allocation for this latest trip under the microscope. It remains unclear how many away supporters will be permitted inside Ibrox for the League Cup quarter-final. Ticket allocations for Glasgow Derby fixtures have become a recurring source of dispute in recent years, and there will now be considerable interest in how the two clubs and the relevant authorities approach this one. Will it be 7000 or the league style 2500? Before any of that is settled, Celtic at least know the task in front of them. A place in the League Cup semi-finals will be on the line at Ibrox on September 12 or 13. Seven days later, Rangers are scheduled to arrive at Celtic Park for the first league meeting between the clubs this season. Two Glasgow Derbies, two different competitions and potentially plenty at stake in the space of eight days. September just became that bit more interesting.
