He got out to a good start, but the leading two at the halfway point were Egor Kornev in lane 5 and Kristof Milak in lane 2. Kornev clocked a 21.06 at the Russian Championships in June and was coming in as the favorite, event though Sheremet beat him in the semi-finals 21.38 to 21.44. The Ukrainian swimmer did not want to be photographed with the Russian swimmer tonight after his victory. However, Sheremet was the strongest coming home and stormed into the wall to win by a quartet of a second over a tie for silver between Kornev (21.37) and Andrej Barna (21.37), who set a new Serbian record. Milak set a new best of 21.46 for 4th, with Portugal’s Diogo Matos Ribeiro lowering his national record with a 21.59 for 6th. Sheremet came into this meet with a lifetime best of 21.62 from the Westmont stop of the Pro Swim Series in March, and led both prelims (21.56) and the semi-finals (21.38). He moves up to rank 7th all-time, and missed Ben Proud’s Championships record of 21.11 by just 0.02 seconds. He will make for a fantastic race in the 50 free as we hear into the LA Olympics, now just a quarter of a second off Cam McEvoy’s World Record from earlier this year.
