Former Celtic striker Teemu Pukki made an immediate impact from the bench as HJK Helsinki drew 1-1 with Motherwell in their Conference League qualifier. Celtic-linked Motherwell attacker Tawanda Maswanhise opened the scoring from the spot in the 64th minute, before Teemu Pukki equalised to leave the tie level ahead of the return game at Fir Park. The Zimbabwe international stepped up and converted to give Motherwell a valuable away lead. Pukki was introduced in the 70th minute and scored less than 60 seconds later, turning inside the box before finishing high beyond Alex Paulsen from a tight angle. The goal was a reminder of the sharp movement and finishing which made the Finn a major success later in his career, even if his time at Celtic never quite worked out. Pukki joined the Hoops from Schalke in 2013 and scored nine goals during his spell in Glasgow. Maswanhise has followed a very different path but has already attracted attention in Scotland. The Motherwell attacker was linked with Celtic during the January transfer window after a strong run of form at Fir Park. Martin O’Neill and Mark Fotheringham were also spotted at a Motherwell Scottish Cup match in which Maswanhise scored, although Celtic never confirmed that he was the reason for their attendance. There has been no confirmation of a formal Celtic offer, but the 23-year-old continues to show why his performances have generated transfer interest. His penalty in Helsinki looked set to give Motherwell the edge before Pukki, another player who once arrived at Celtic with plenty of expectation, responded almost immediately. The pair will meet again at Fir Park, where Motherwell must find a way past Pukki while Maswanhise looks to add another European goal to his growing record.
