Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi has reportedly bid farewell to his teammates and supporters following the 2-0 pre-season victory over Brest at the City Ground ahead of a permanent move to Coventry City.
The Nigerian international has been linked with a departure from Forest after struggling to consistently reproduce his best form since joining the Premier League club from Union Berlin.
Despite a difficult campaign, Awoniyi showed glimpses of his quality towards the end of last season, scoring three goals and providing two assists in his final six appearances to help Forest retain their top-flight status.
However, his position in the pecking order behind Chris Wood and Igor Jesus has raised further doubts over his future and chances of securing regular playing time.
The situation has reportedly attracted interest from newly-promoted Coventry, with Awoniyi believed to be close to completing a move to the CBS Arena after undergoing his medical.
Coventry are understood to have reached an agreement with Nottingham Forest over a deal worth around £17m (approximately N31 billion in Nigerian currency) for the Nigerian striker.
Awoniyi reportedly received a guard of honour from his Forest teammates before bidding farewell to the supporters following his substitution against Brest.
Confirming the development, Forest manager Olivier Glasner said to Forest TV: “The striker received a guard of honour from the Forest squad as he walked out at the City Ground.
“A very good atmosphere, supportive, and a great relationship between the stand and the team. It is the most important thing and also I think Taiwo got the guard of honour because it looks like he will leave us.
“You can see the great bond between the players and the fans. A lot of applause and appreciation for Taiwo’s performances over the last couple of years.”
With his potential move to Coventry edging closer, Awoniyi will be keen to secure regular playing time and rediscover his best form as he prepares for a fresh challenge at the CBS Arena.
