Posh Women suffer defeat on the opening day of the Northern Premier Division season.
It was always going to be a tough assignment on the opening day of the Northern Premier Division for Peterborough United coming up against one of the established Tier 3 sides in Rugby Borough and so it proved, as one of the favourites for promotion secured a 5-0 home success.
Jake Poole's side held their own for long periods in the game, but were ultimately undone by defensive errors and a bit of quality as a double from Mai Moncaster saw the hosts on their way.
After a fairly quiet opening to the game, Borough found the breakthrough on six minutes as MONCASTER fired low past goalkeeper Neive Corry. Corry did brilliantly to deny Wiseman on 12 minutes, clawing a curling effort around the post.
The lead was doubled on 14 minutes as Posh were caught trying to play out from the back and APINDIA took advantage, finding the back of the net.
An excellent delivery from Keir Perkins just eluded Lauren Wilshaw at the back post on 29 minutes before a strike from Perkins was gathered by the keeper at the near post.
On the stroke of half-time, a defensive header from May following a corner clipped the top of the bar before the home side took control just after the interval as MONCASTER rounded Corry and squeezed the ball past Pitt on the line.
APINDIA scored the goal of the game on 52 minutes, completing a one-two before rifling a left-footed effort off the underside of the crossbar and into the net.
CLARKSON made it 5-0 with a powerful header from a corner kick just after the hour mark and at that point, Posh could have gone under, but continued to play with heart and started to create more opportunities.
May fired over from a long-throw from around 12-yards before excellent pressing saw the ball land at the feet of the former West Bromwich Albion striker, but her effort was superbly kept out by the keeper.
Evie Driscoll-King was denied after a strong run before Moncaster squandered a chance for her hat-trick at the other end, side-footing a half volley over the crossbar.
Posh are next in action next Sunday as they welcome Liverpool Feds to PIMS Park (2pm).
