Leeds United were victorious in their final pre-season friendly, defeating Bundesliga side Augsburg 4-0. However, for all the well-worked team goals and Tarik Muharemovic’s stunning overhead kick, there was a lot of talk after the game regarding the future of a member of Daniel Farke’s squad. Sebastiaan Bornauw is reportedly on Hamburg’s radar as they look to bring the Belgian defender back to Germany. Notably, the 27-year-old was an unused substitute by Farke, who confirmed after the game on Saturday that “something will happen in the next 24 or 48 hours”, per Leeds Live. Florian Plettenberg confirms Leeds agree deal for Nico Elvedi as Sebastiaan Bornauw closes in on exit For a couple of days now, it has been known that Nico Elvedi is the defender Leeds are targeting to replace Bornauw. The data suggests that Elvedi would, in fact, be an upgrade on Bornauw. That defensive switch looks set to happen sooner rather than later. On Saturday, Florian Plettenberg reported that Leeds had agreed a fee of around £8.5million with Borussia Monchengladbach for Elvedi. The German outfit also have a 15% sell-on clause. A medical for the centre-half is being prepared. The Swiss international looks set to join Leeds on a three-year deal. This agreement between Leeds and Elvedi means Bornauw has seemingly been given the green light to leave. Plettenberg also reported on Sunday that Bornauw is set to join Hamburg on loan with an option to buy. This option is said to be in the region of £3.4-£4.3million. Bornauw’s medical is scheduled for Monday. Leeds United should’ve pushed for a permanent sale of Sebastiaan Bornauw Whilst it is good to get Bornauw off the books with Elvedi’s arrival now imminent, the fact it is a loan with an option to buy is disappointing. If Bornauw is poor, or gets injured, we will be stuck with him again. If he has the season of his life, we are now unable to sell him for a higher fee. It’s a lose-lose. However, the 49ers have to be given credit for how swiftly they have agreed a deal for another defender. Especially in the aftermath of the speculation surrounding Bornauw escalating so quickly. I suppose there’s still a frustration that this urgency could not be replicated in other areas of the squad where we also need depth. The left-back and goalkeeper positions are examples of areas in which we are short on numbers. It will be interesting to see whether Elvedi can put up more of a fight than Bornauw when it comes to challenging Jaka Bijol and Joe Rodon for a place in the starting XI. But I suppose we’ll have to wait and see. Especially when considering that the entirety of Elvedi’s pre-season preparations have been with Monchengladbach and not Leeds.
