Samuel Chukwueze stood out as one of the best performers in the win over Manchester United, and he is relishing his new role.
After a summer of experimentation in terms of the role that he has played, Chukwueze in Wroclaw confirmed that he has the potential to be a real added value in Ruben Amorim’s squad. Against United, the Nigerian side swept away any remaining doubts about his suitability for the wing-back role.

Throughout his career, he’s always played as an attacking winger, but the new tactical setup Amorim has tailored for him suits him well. Chukwueze intends to make use of his new chance, both to help the team but also to finally earn a stay at Milan.
After the game he spoke to La Gazzetta dello Sport about his adaptation to the role of playing a bit further back from usual, but managing to get on the scoresheet regardless with a late run into the box.
Is this your best moment since you’ve been at Milan? Are you happy?
“Of course, I’m very happy. It was a good test for the team, to prepare for the season. We did everything perfectly. I think we have to keep working hard for the season and the next match, the first of Serie A, against Torino.”
I get the feeling you have a good connection with Amorim. Is that true?
“Yes, he’s a good coach. He trusts me, so he gave me an opportunity. Now it’s up to me to seize it… He simply gave me faith, and I think I have to take advantage of it. I can’t waste this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, returning to Milan after my loan.”
Do you like this new position?
“Yes, although it’s a position I have to adapt to because I’ve never played in this position in my career. As a footballer, if a coach wants you to play in this position, you have to do it by believing in yourself and in the coach, because he knows what he wants.
“So I just have to keep working hard, believing in myself and that I can do it. For me, it’s an opportunity I have to seize. I know it’s a difficult task, but I believe in myself. I know I can do it, that I can do anything.”
Are you also satisfied with how this Milan is playing?
“Yes, a lot. For me, I think it’s something I need to work on. It’s my first time playing in this position, so I’m continuing to work hard. I need to improve every practice. I think the coaching staff is helping me.
“The coach is helping me too. Every time I make a mistake, he tells me, ‘Oh, Chukwueze, this is what you have to do.’ So I think I’ll improve before the season starts.”
Happy with the win against Manchester United?
“Yes, I’m very happy and so is the team. We’ve worked hard all week and are preparing well for the season. We want to start Serie A with a win, to gain the confidence everyone needs. It’s essential that the fans and the club believe in us too.”
How important is it to have a striker like Gonçalo Ramos?
“I think he’s a fantastic striker, someone you want to play with. He knows when to come forward, he’s good in the air, and he attacks deep behind defenders. I think he’s a fantastic guy.”
What did he tell you after the assist?
“It’s between me and him.”
