Find out more about MK Dons’ latest signing Sam Silvera A winger capable of playing at wing-back was exactly what Paul Warne was asking for just a few days ago when spoke about MK Dons’ transfer wish-list, and he has got his man in the form of Sam Silvera. The 25-year-old arrives after leaving Middlesbrough earlier in the summer, and ticks a lot of the boxes Warne believes to be missing from the squad heading into the first League One campaign in three years. Making 60 appearances at the Riverside Stadium in a three year spell, 18 of them last season, Silvera is no stranger to English football, having also spent time on loan at Portsmouth and Blackpool, where he played 15 times in League One. Though born in London, his footballing career began in Down Under when he joined Western Sydney Wanderers U20s in 2017. Two years later, he agreed a move to Central Coast Mariners where he spent a year and got A-League experience. After a trial with MLS side LA FC, Silvera moved to Portugal to join Pacos de Ferreira for an undisclosed fee. Though he would never kick a ball for his parent club, he spent loan spells at Casa Pia and Sanjoanese before returning to Australia with Newcastle Jets - rivals of Central Coast - where he would make 21 appearances. The winger would then further fan the flames in the rivalry by rejoining the Mariners after leaving Pacos, but would ease tensions by scoring in his first game back and would help lead them to the A-League championship, and victory in the Grand Final, where he scored and set another up. His performances would alter Championship Middlesbrough to his services as they landed Silvera on a three-year deal in summer of 2023. Goals would soon follow him too, finishing his first season in England with six goals from the flanks in 42 outings. Despite being a regular at the Riverside, he would spent the following season out on loan, initially at newly promoted Portsmouth before joining Blackpool. During last pre-season, then Boro boss Rob Edwards would develop Silvera’s abilities into becoming a wing-back. He would continue there under new boss Kim Hellberg following Edwards’ departure for Wolves. He made a total of 23 appearances for the club last season, including one for the Australian national side, who he has featured eight times for since his 2023 debut.
