David Sullivan’s ‘magic number’ for West Ham sale revealed after offer
David Sullivan currently values his 38.8 per cent share in West Ham United at the £400million mark.
That is according to former Everton chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, who believes that the entire club is worth around £800m at the moment.
This comes after recent reports that Sullivan swiftly rejected an offer from prospective buyer Amanda Staveley, which was believed to be in the region of £300m.
However, Wyness believes that a bid of £380m would be enough to have Sullivan seriously considering a sale, after he recently made it clear that he hopes to cash in.
The Irons’ owner hopes that he will be able to sell up as a Premier League club next summer, but that is dependent on them securing promotion from the Championship at the first attempt.
Relegation has undoubtedly seen the East Londoners’ valuation take a significant hit, but Sullivan’s shares remain hugely valuable right now.
David Sullivan ‘bullish’ over West Ham shares
Everton’s former chief Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes that Sullivan remains “bullish” over his shares, despite his desire to sell.
The Scottish businessman feels that the 77-year-old is still keen to ensure he gets maximum value from his asset, regardless of his desire to step away from the club.
Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness explained the figure that Staveley is likely to need for Sullivan to do business.
“Well, I know that when they were in the Premier League, Sullivan thought they were worth £1.2billion. Obviously they're not in the Premier League anymore,” he said.
“But I think Sullivan's still quite bullish in terms of what he believes for his shares and he's also a very canny businessman as we know.
“I think the magic number is going to be between £350m and £380m, which I think will be the number that may move the dial. I think Sullivan would start at £400m as his valuation, but they could settle at £380m.
“That would give a valuation of West Ham at around the £800m mark. So that's where I think it may get done, but still what a price for a Championship club.”
West Ham pushing for Jordan James hijack
Former Hammers scout Mick Brown told Football Insider on Sunday that his former club are ready to step up their interest in Rennes midfielder Jordan James, having sent scouts to watch him several times during his loan spell with Leicester City last term.
Wolves are also very keen to sign the 22-year-old, and are understood to already be in talks over a move for the Welshman.
However, Brown believes that West Ham are also planning a late move for the starlet, and suggested that fans should “watch this space.”
It remains to be seen whether the capital club can beat Wolves to the deal, but they are now preparing a late attempt to snatch James from under their noses.
