Man City player ratings vs Arsenal with five 4/10s as Jack Grealish returns
Manchester City player ratings from the Manchester Evening News after a 3-0 defeat to Arsenal in the Community Shield
Manchester City were beaten 3-0 by Arsenal in Cardiff as the Enzo Maresca era started with a heavy defeat in the Community Shield. Maresca picked a strong team for the season's annual curtain-raiser but they fell behind inside a minute when Riccardo Calafiori was given too much space in the box.
Kai Havertz added a second after half an hour to cement Arsenal's grip on the game and their fans did the Poznan around the Principality Stadium to rub salt in the wound for City fans. Jack Grealish came on for Jeremy Doku at half-time to make an unlikely comeback for the Blues but Martin Odegaard scored immediately after the break to make things worse.
Erling Haaland, Elliot Anderson, Nico O'Reilly and Phil Foden were all brought off before an hour was up with City hopes of winning a trophy in Maresca's first game in charge well and truly over. Improvement will be needed when the Blues take on Bournemouth in a week's time.
Here are the player ratings from the Manchester Evening News:
Donnarumma: Got himself in a mess for the Havertz goal and looked uncomfortable as Arsenal put his distribution under pressure. 4
Khusanov: Some poor defending to make it too easy for Arsenal on the goals, even if there was better play at other times. 4
Dias: Got off to a horrible start with the goal in the opening minute and could not bring order to the defence. 4
Gvardiol: More than one ugly bit of play that brought an Arsenal goal as he switched off too often. 4
O'Reilly: Some nice play with Doku on the left and City kept working the ball down his side. 6
Kovacic: Overwhelmed as the sole holding midfield player and unable to get City away from danger. 4
Anderson: Not the debut he would have wanted, pushed out onto the right where he never looked comfortable. 5
Foden: Overrun in the early stages and booked trying to prevent the Arsenal charge. Still waiting for that spark. 5
Semenyo: Flashes from the right wing but he struggled to stay involved as the game moved by without him. 5
Doku: Didn't always make the right decisions in the final third but he proved a handful for Arsenal to contain. 6
Haaland: A few half-chances that he couldn't convert on a frustrating - and short - afternoon for him. 5
