Arsenal were imposing, playing slick, quick, and creative football as the Champions put down a marker ahead of the new season. Mikel Arteta named a strong lineup, with Bruno Guimarães and Christos Tzolis starting their first competitive games for the club. Noni Madeueke started with Max Dowman on the bench, with Bukayo Saka, Declan Rice, and Martin Zubimendi all on the bench having missed out being in the squad on Wednesday. Notably, Gabriel Martinelli, Gabriel Jesus, and Ethan Nwaneri were left out of the squad completely. Arsenal got the game underway, and the Champions went ahead after 25 seconds. Calafiori drove forward and the ball was worked outside for Tzolis, whose cross was cleared. White played into Lewis-Skelly whose superb reverse through ball found Calafiori, who passed into the corner. 1-0. Arsenal won two corners in quick succession. From the second one, Gabriel went down under pressure from Khusanov, but Gabriel was also pulling the Uzbeki’s shirt, and the foul went City’s way. Raya was called into action on20 minutes. Foden’s curling effort from range was dipping but Raya pushed it away, and White was fouled by O’Reilly while clearing. On 22 minutes, Madueke did well, first taking down a cross field ball and then, having held off Doku, his backheel found Bruno on the overlap, but Bruno couldn’t pick out an Arsenal player in the box. At the other side, Doku beat White, but Gabriel coming across blocked the cutback out for a corner. Kai Havertz doubled Arsenal’s lead on 28 minutes. Madueke played inside to Ødegaard, and his cross found Tzolis, who got free of Khusanov. He headed back across goal, and Havertz headed down and through Donnarumma. 2-0. Haaland was slipped in behind by Doku, but he was forced slightly wide by Gabriel and shot high and wide of Raya’s goal. Arsenal played neatly through the thirds, with Ødegaard playing into Havertz, who played wide to Tzolis. Tzolis looked for Calafiori on the overlap, and he went down in the box but was booked for simulation, with Khusanov pulling out of the challenge. On 40 minutes Doku was found by a crossfield pass in space. Three Arsenal defenders came to close him down but he found Haaland in the middle, whose shot was straight at Raya and pushed away. Doku, though, was found again but White blocked his shot at point blank range. Madueke picked up a loose ball and slipped White in on the overlap. There wasn’t anyone in the centre, but White’s cross picked out Calafiori arriving at the top of 6 yard box, who volleyed over. One minute was added on at the end of the first half. Arsenal again nicely played through midfield, and Donnarumma spilled Havertz’s cross. Ødegaard got to the loose ball but his shot was saved off the line, with Donnarumma getting a glove on it to slow the shot down. Arsenal made one change at the break with Declan Rice replacing Bruno Guimarães. The Champions started the second half like they did the first, scoring early. Ødegaard won the ball back, and Lewis-Skelly played wide to Tzolis. He drove inside, and passed to Ødegaard, who beat Gvadiol, sat Donnarumma down and slotted into goal. 3-0. On the hour mark Pierro Hincapie and Bukayo Saka replaced Calafiori and Madueke. City meanwhile brought on Cherki, whose first involvement was to misplay a pass out of play. Saka beat Gvadiol to a long ball, knocking him off the ball and then tried to beat Donnarumma at the near post but shot into the side netting. More outstanding play from Ødegaard saw him slip White in, and he found Lewis-Skelly in the centre but with his weaker right foot he couldn’t shift his body into a good shooting position. The flag then went up for an offside against White. Havertz’s headed left Tzolis in space but his pass for Saka was too hard and his touch was heavy. He chased the touch but Donnarumma swiped the ball away at the top of the area. On 74 minutes Cherki’s rasping shot forced a save from Raya. On 75 minutes Arsenal made a double change. Gyökeres replaced Havertz and Zubimendi replaced Lewis-Skelly. On 80 minutes Hincapie drove down the left and fired a cutback into the middle for Saka, who got underneath and shot over the bar. Good play from Cherki set up Semenyo, whose shot was struck hard but Raya was able to get a hand out and parry. Ødegaard was booked on 84 minutes for a late challenge on Grealish. He was then subbed off, with Eberechi Eze replacing him. Three minutes were added on. Cherki played a dangerous ball across goal but Semenyo couldn’t make a clean connection, and Raya cleared. Semenyo looked to go down the outside of Hincapie, but the Ecuadorian got between the ball and Semenyo, and was fouled before the referee brought an end to proceedings.
