Huddersfield Town Women secure 1-1 draw on return to FAWNL Northern Premier Division Rebecca Beresford’s second half strike gave Town the lead in Norwich before the hosts rescued a point Huddersfield Town Women came away from Norwich City with a point as they returned to the third tier after a two-year absence. In a much anticipated return to the FAWNL Northern Premier Division, Glen Preston’s side faced a tough trip to Norwich City on the opening day. After a goalless first half, Rebecca Beresford struck on the hour mark to give Town the lead in a tight affair. However, the lead would only last seven minutes when Issy Moore got the home side back on terms with a shot into the top corner. Both teams had chances to win it but will ultimately be pleased to start the season with a point as the two promoted sides feel their way into the season. After a positive opening day result, Town’s attention turns to Loughborough Lightning next Sunday. Loughborough, who Town beat in the FA Cup last season, fell to defeat at the hands of Hull City in their first game of the season. And Town welcome them to Accu Stadium next Sunday for their first home game of the campaign, something manager Glen Preston is excited for. He told We Are Terriers: “It’s absolutely brilliant. We love playing at the Accu. We want to represent the club with the highest standard that we can.” Town suffered the disappointment of a 1-0 to Leeds to Leeds at the stadium last season, but Preston believes his side are much stronger for that experience. He reflected: “It just adds excitement. I did reflect on the Leeds game thinking about the pressure of playing there but if you look back we should have won that game 3-0 or 4-0. They just defended well and it didn’t go our way. “I feel there’s a bit of righting the wrongs of last year. If there’s one thing I was disappointed with last season was that we lost that game as the Accu. “Every time we play in these games everyone gains a little more experience and we’ve got a lot of that in the squad now. “Our only focus on that game is to get the first win at the stadium and show the fans what we’re all about and win some more over - that’d be the icing on the cake for me.” Last year’s game at the Accu saw 1,000 fans in attendance and Town will be hoping the fans head down again to support their 2025/26 double winners. Captain Beth Stanfield is looking forward to her side being able to showcase what they can do at the higher level in front of a big crowd. She told We Are Terriers: “It’s great that it’s at the Accu and that it’s the first home game. It’s one to set our stall out in. “We don’t have the greatest record at the Accu so hopefully we can right the wrongs against a team we beat last season in Loughborough. We’re excited to play there again. “Obviously it’s different. The pitch is a lot bigger and the surface is really nice. “In many ways it’s a good opportunity to play good football and show what we’re about. All those people come to watch you and it’s an opportunity to show fans what the team and the club are about.” Town get their home campaign underway next Sunday at the Accu against Loughborough Lightning at 2pm.
