Arsenal youngster Ethan Nwaneri is set to leave the club before the end of the summer transfer window, according to transfer market expert Fabrizio Romano.
Nwaneri was not included in Arsenal’s matchday squad for Sunday’s Community Shield clash against Manchester City, despite being involved throughout the club’s pre-season preparations.
The 19-year-old had returned to Arsenal after spending the second half of last season on loan at Marseille and made an encouraging impression during the club’s pre-season campaign.
He scored in Arsenal’s 3-0 behind-closed-doors victory over MK Dons and also found the net in the 2-1 defeat to Borussia Dortmund.
His time at Marseille, however, was less productive. Nwaneri joined the French club on loan in January and finished the spell with two goals and one assist from 11 appearances.
Speaking on Friday ahead of the Community Shield, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta made it clear that regular playing time would be central to any decision over Nwaneri’s future.
Arteta said he wanted the youngster to remain at the club but stressed that he needed to play football and that Arsenal would have to guarantee him sufficient minutes if he stayed.
Nwaneri’s potential departure will also be closely followed in Nigeria because he remains a player of interest to the Nigeria Football Federation and manager Eric Chelle, who scouted him a Coupe de France clash against Rennes back in February.
He has represented England at youth level but has yet to make a senior appearance for the Three Lions, meaning he remains eligible to switch allegiance to Nigeria.
Nwaneri’s next destination remains undecided, with Chelsea, Borussia Dortmund, AC Milan, RB Leipzig, Fulham and Galatasaray among the clubs linked with the midfielder.
