Chris Wilder has hinted that Sheffield United could turn to alternatives to Leicester City's Harry Souttar in their search for a new centre-back. The Blades have pushed to bring Souttar back to Bramall Lane all summer and have seen two bids turned down. City are understood to want around £10m for the defender, who has captained Russell Martin's side in the first two games of the season. Wrexham have also shown interest in Souttar, but he's only expected to leave the King Power Stadium if Leicester's valuation is met. On Saturday, Wilder was asked about the latest on United's search for a new centre-back amid links to Anel Ahmedhodzic. "Well. he's a centre-half, apparently he's available, and he's got history with the football club," Wilder said. "So we're not just eyeing one player up; that's a dangerous game to play. "So there are options out there, in the loan market and with small fees, as we understand. So we'll keep working on it and see what rocks up. But it's an area of the pitch that we need to strengthen if we're going to be competitive this year." On Souttar specifically, he said: "We put a bid in for Harry Souttar so that's with Steve [Bettis] and the board see what happens on that and if that advances anymore." City are expected to sign at least one central defender before the transfer window closes in just over two weeks after Ben Nelson's ACL injury. Wout Faes' future is also in doubt after he missed Saturday's draw at Notts County, with Martin confirming that a bid has been rejected for the Belgian. "We'll be looking to sign at least one player in that area and then be ready to react to anything else as well," Martin confirmed before Saturday's game. "I think seeing a centre-back in the building at some point will probably be inevitable."
