How Raith Rovers' Charlie Telfer got his first big break as a kid at Rangers Raith Rovers star Charlie Telfer has recalled how he initially got his dream football break courtesy of his boyhood favourites Rangers when he was just eight years old. The 31-year-old midfield ace, who joined Raith on a two-year deal this summer after leaving his secind spell at Airdrieonians, had Rangers as his first club on a nomadic journey which has since seen the Scotland under-17, under-19 and under-21 player also turn out for Dundee United, Livingston (loan), Almere City, Greenock Morton, Falkirk, Ross County and Hamilton Accies (loan). Recalling his initial foray towards the top echelons of the game with the Ibrox giants way back in 2003, Law Hospital-born Telfer told the Fife Free Press: “Back then I was a Rangers season ticket holder who went to the games with family and friends. "I went to a Champions League game with my dad and it came up on the screen at Ibrox ‘Rangers Soccer Schools’ and there was one at Bell College in Hamilton, so I went to that. "I think it was a Wednesday evening when I was eight and then after that I was asked to the Advanced Soccer Schools on Sundays at Murray Park. "I was there for I think for six or so months and then I was eventually asked to sign with the Pro Youth under 10s as it was at the time. "Then I was with Rangers until I was 18 or 19 years old (inlcuding winning the Scottish Youth Cup in 2013-2014), so that break with Bell College and the soccer schools was a big part of my career. "Albeit it was, 20-odd years ago now, which sounds crazy to say, it was very fond memories and really probably the start of me enjoying my football. "I did football from a young age, but I don't think I really loved it. I played rugby as well and I think I preferred that. "It wasn't until I went to the soccer schools where I really enjoyed it. And it kind of got a bit more serious as time progressed when I went to the Advanced Soccer Schools and then obviously signed with the Youth Development Team.” When asked for his career highlights, Telfer said that making his senior debut for Rangers in a 4-0 League One victory at Stenhousemuir in April 2014 (he came on as a 68th-minute substitute for Dean Shiels) was “amazing”. He added: “I had gone through the youth team for years and years, so that was the kind of pinnacle. "But I've had so many great moments. After going to Dundee United as a young boy (he had a three-year spell with the Arabs between 2014 and 2017), I got Young Player of the Month in the first season I was there. "Then I obviously had a promotion with Airdrie which was amazing and then the season after that we won the Challenge Cup then had a real promotion push and finished fourth. It was a really successful time there. "So I've had amazing times throughout my career at all the different clubs. "There's been some real highs and some real lows, but there are probably a few that I think stick out. "I won the Challenge Cup at Dundee United as well (in the 2016-2017 season) which was great.” Now Telfer is hoping to make more great memories in Kirkcaldy.
