Very few interviews with the Manchester United camp have passed without mention of the name Marcus Rashford this week. The returns of the likes of Kobbie Mainoo and Lisandro Martinez, and a reunion with former boss Ruben Amorim, have been mere footnotes in a week dominated by Rashford's return to the fold. Rashford wasn't part of the squad that drew with Leeds at Croke Park on Wednesday, but he made his first appearance for United since December 2024 on Saturday when coming on as a second-half substitute in the defeat to AC Milan. The former Barcelona loanee looked sharp and ready to contribute to the United cause next season should he remain at Old Trafford beyond the transfer window. Harry Maguire was asked about what Rashford can bring to the side after the 4-2 defeat to Milan. "He can improve us, for sure," said Maguire. "I think when you seen when he come on, he threatens the back line really well. He could have even scored for us. "He's a huge threat to have in your team. So if he's going to stay with us, obviously the transfer window is still open, but we hope as players that he stays and he's a big asset to have. I've played with Marcus for numerous years and I know that playing against him, playing with him in training is going to help us." Maguire followed Youri Tielemans and Noussair Mazraoui in throwing his support behind Rashford. Both Tielemans and Mazraoui spoke effusively about him, with the latter highlighting Rashford's qualities when asked a question that made no mention of the forward. All three are clearly delighted to have someone of Rashford's quality in the team, with Tielemans going as far as to say "you want that type of player in your team". The problem is nobody can say for certain that Rashford will be part of the United team when the transfer window closes on September 1. While the players and Michael Carrick are more than happy to have him in the squad, United remain open to the idea of selling the forward, and if a suitable bid arrives - as unlikely as that may now seem - Rashford will likely be sold. United's plans to sign a left winger have been shelved, and as we edge closer to the closing of the transfer window, if Rashford were to leave, it is difficult to see United replacing him with a player of similar quality in such a short space of time. Everyone at United appears to have made peace with the fact that Rashford will be at the club for the 2026/27 season. There's no doubting the threat he can bring, and it's something his teammates are relishing seeing in action. But if a potential suitor knocks at the door with an offer United deem acceptable, Rashford will likely be on his way. Having spent a week hearing the United players and manager speak about how delighted they are to be working alongside Rashford, selling him now could be seen as something of a risk.
