Leeds United have been ambitious once again this summer in terms of their signings. Tarik Muharemovic have already signed for £34million, whilst James Trafford is joining him for £40million. But despite the 49ers’ willingness to splash the cash, they appear to be willing to pass on targets and not pay what they deem to be over the odds for them. Shea Charles is a prime example of this. Leeds have had multiple bids rejected for the midfielder from Southampton, with Fulham now looking like they will be the ones to sign Charles. But a Leeds United icon has praised the club’s transfer stance when it comes to not giving in to Southampton’s demands. This was rejected and Fulham appear as though they will be signing Charles for around £25.7million. Speaking to The Yorkshire Post, former Leeds defender Tony Dorigo praised Leeds for standing firm when it comes to the Charles transfer saga. “Clearly a few bids have gone, but I think the club have shown – the recruitment team have shown – they’ll have a value for a player, and quite simply they won’t go above that. “They know how much they’ve got to spend, they know the gaps they want to fill, how much each position they can go up to with their bids. I’m impressed – I think it’s the right way to go about things. “The market is a difficult one. When you’ve got Morgan Rogers going (to Chelsea) for £117m, there’s a knock-on effect for every single player. It’s difficult to find that value. “Football clubs, and Leeds United are no different, there is a finite amount you can spend, so you have to spend it extremely wisely. I think they’ve shown, over the last few windows, that’s exactly what they have done. I’m sure they know exactly what they’re doing. “It is the right thing because they’ll probably want to put funds elsewhere to really improve the squad. No doubt Shea Charles is a really promising player, but we shouldn’t be just dancing to Southampton’s tune. We should be responsibly dancing to our own tune. That’s exactly what the club are doing.” Tony Dorigo is spot on regarding Shea Charles I’ve said all along with Charles that whilst his addition would be nice, I do not feel like the centre of our midfield is an area of our squad that needs attention for now. We could not afford to sit around and waste the entirety of our transfer window negotiating with Southampton. Clearly the 49ers do not feel like Charles is worth the asking price, so we turned our attention elsewhere. There are plenty of positions we need to sign before another midfielder, so to potentially miss out on Charles is not all that disappointing for me, at least. Our depth in midfield is incredible when compared to other areas of our squad. Namely left-back, winger, striker and goalkeeper. I am starting to get concerned that we are leaving it late with some of our transfer business. The Premier League season is on the horizon, and we still need another three or four bodies through the door. So hopefully any transfer dealings we do before now and the end of the window are straightforward, unlike how things turned out when we pursued Charles.
