West Ham United have turned their attention to Leeds United striker Joel Piroe and are working on a deal, according to Sky Sports. The Hammers had originally prioritised AZ Alkmaar’s Republic of Ireland international Troy Parrott, who scored 31 goals last season, as their top attacking target, but talks have stalled due to a difference in valuation. With the transfer deadline looming, West Ham have quickly pivoted to Piroe as a prime alternative. Since moving to Elland Road from Swansea City in 2023 for €14 million, the former PSV academy graduate has scored over 34 goals in all competitions for Leeds. Despite his impressive record during their promotion campaigns, Piroe’s minutes dried up last season; he started just two league games and failed to score. The main obstacle to Piroe’s potential move to East London is the structure of the deal. West Ham want an initial loan with a mandatory purchase option, a framework that helps manage their financial commitment while guaranteeing a permanent transfer. Leeds, however, prefer a direct sale to fund their own summer business. West Ham offered £17m for Parrott in talks with AZ, and a similar fee should be enough for Leeds to sanction Piroe’s exit given his lack of playing time. With Piroe keen for a prominent role and West Ham determined to provide their manager with a new striker before the window closes, talks are expected to continue. In the meantime, West Ham face a huge Championship opener against Burnley at Turf Moor in their second game of the season, following an EFL Cup victory over Portsmouth.
