Aston Villa strike £30m goalkeeper deal as Emi Martinez talks continue
A busy summer window at Villa Park has seen several major exits.
Villa have agreed a deal worth around £30m to sign goalkeeper Zion Suzuki from Parma with Emi Martinez in talks to leave the club.
The Argentina international is the subject of renewed interest from Juventus, who have increased their offer from earlier in the summer.
Martinez’s potential exit has prompted the move for Suzuki, who is seen as his long-term replacement.
The 23-year-old Japan international had been high on Villa’s list of goalkeeper targets since the start of the transfer window and recently emerged as a target for Paris Saint-Germain.
Juventus’ new offer for Martinez is thought to be worth around £8.5m.
Villa sources had insisted earlier in the window the 33-year-old would be staying but instead he could now become the latest high-profile departure from Unai Emery’s squad.
There are some question marks over his short-term fitness, after he suffered a broken finger while warming up for May’s Europa League final win over Freiburg.
Martinez has made 256 appearances since joining Villa from Arsenal for £20m in 2020.
During that time he has won the World Cup with Argentina and twice won the Lev Yashin Trophy after being named best goalkeeper in the world.
Suzuki, who was born in New Jersey but grew up in Japan, played all four matches for his country at the World Cup.
