Johan Ackermann admitted there were lots of learnings for the Bulls from their loss to the All Blacks but feels their tactic of attacking from deep inside their own half is unlikely to work when they face the Springboks. Since replacing Scott Robertson as New Zealand‘s head coach, Dave Rennie has changed the All Blacks’ style of play from mostly kicking for territory to their traditional ball-in-hand approach. Rennie’s troops stayed true to their attacking roots against the Bulls as they ran the ball from all areas of the field and their efforts were richly rewarded. While Ackermann was full of praise for the All Blacks’ attacking style of play, he believes they won’t be able to try some of the attacking moves, which paid off against the Bulls, when they take on the Boks. At the post-match press conference in Pretoria on Saturday, Ackermann was asked if he had any advice for the Springboks ahead of their eagerly anticipated Test series opener against their arch-rivals and he replied: “To be fair, obviously the Springboks are match-fit, and there’s quality players, they’ve played a long time together, and they’ve got some of the best heads in the world putting a plan together. “So, I think the Springboks will be well-prepared, and time will tell. “The All Blacks maybe had the scoreboard luxury tonight to try a few things from deep in their own half that I don’t think they’ll get away with against the Springboks. ‘They may find themselves in a bit of trouble’ “You know, that’s the way they do play sometimes, but they may find themselves in a bit of trouble with that (approach). “I think the Springboks will see that there are opportunities if you keep the ball in hand against the All Blacks, and I’m sure that they will look at the game (Bulls v All Blacks) and work on that.” Want more from Planet Rugby? Although Ackermann believes the Springboks are a well prepared unit, he feels being patient against the All Blacks is the key to success – something which he admits his side did not do against the men in black. “I think, again, they were well-planned, the All Blacks, but I feel that if we were a little bit more patient with the ball in hand tonight, we could have finished a few opportunities, and I think hopefully the Boks will take that,” he said.
