Brescia’s financial collapse has dealt Massimo Cellino one final blow: the roughly €4m the club stood to receive in connection with Sandro Tonali’s move to Tottenham will instead go to a FIFA fund. As reported by MilanNews.it, the money stems from the FIFA solidarity contributions triggered by Tonali’s transfer to Roberto De Zerbi’s Spurs. As one of the clubs that helped develop the midfielder, Brescia were entitled to a slice of the deal, and Cellino had reactivated the club’s dormant registration on 30 June, even entering an Under-16 team in a provincial league, specifically to keep Brescia eligible to collect it. Cellino vows Tonali cash appeal after Brescia liquidation ruling Those manoeuvres have been overtaken by events in court. On 28 July, Cellino’s 70th birthday, the Tribunale di Brescia declared the judicial liquidation of Brescia Calcio, ending 114 years of history spanning Serie A and Serie B. The ruling followed the club’s exclusion from the professional leagues for missed financial deadlines and the €20m of debt that had built up. Cellino, however, is not letting the matter rest. The owner has announced his intention to appeal, arguing the decision hinges on a misinterpretation. “I hope this decision is still reversible,” he told Italpress, “because there’s a big error of interpretation and a harm that must be avoided in the interest of the creditors.” He suggested a formal challenge was likely, pointing to what he described as a communication error in the handling of the case that had never been fully clarified.
