Few teams in Formula 1 carry the historical weight that McLaren does. With 10 constructors' championships to its name and a story stretching back to Bruce McLaren's first world championship start at Monaco in 1966, the Woking outfit is one of the sport's true institutions. And for Andrea Stella, the responsibility of steering that legacy forward is something he does not take lightly. McLaren marked two extraordinary milestones at the 2026 Monaco Grand Prix earlier this season, celebrating both 60 years since its F1 debut and its 1,000th grand prix, the second team in history to reach that figure after Ferrari. The occasion was fitting given Monaco was where it all began for Bruce McLaren six decades ago. Under Stella's leadership since the start of 2023, when McLaren was languishing near the back of the grid, the team's trajectory has been nothing short of remarkable. A sweeping technical restructure transformed them into podium contenders within months, and by 2024 McLaren had clinched its first constructors' championship in 26 years. A second followed in 2025, along with Lando Norris's maiden drivers' title, taking the team's tally under Stella to 21 grand prix wins and 22 pole positions heading into this season. That modern resurgence makes Stella's words about safeguarding McLaren's heritage all the more resonant. Asked how responsible he feels to look after McLaren's legacy, Stella said: "It is certainly a significant responsibility, coupled with a sense of pride, which I'm sure is shared by all my colleagues in the team. "It is a privilege to lead this team because of what it represents in the history and present of Formula 1, but above all because of the way the team continues to look ahead and tackle challenges: striving every day to be better than yesterday. "There's a hunger for victory, there's energy, there's talent. There's a desire to write new chapters that live up to the tradition we carry on our shoulders, and to do so in true McLaren style."
