'A few weeks' - Newcastle United hit by fresh injury blow as key man ruled out v Liverpool
Newcastle United 1-2 Bayer Leverkusen: Matthias Jaissle confirmed a fresh injury blow for Newcastle ahead of the new Premier League season.
Matthias Jaissle has confirmed Joelinton miss the start of the season for Newcastle United against Liverpool next week.
The Brazilian has picked up an injury in training and will be ruled out for a number of weeks, the German head coach revealed.
Jaissle was unprompted in revealing Joelinton’s injury problem as he answered a question regarding the experience of his squad ahead of the Premier League opener against Liverpool next weekend.

“You need experience in the current squad,” he said. “Now with Joelinton, a player who's unfortunately injured, so he will be missing a couple of weeks as it looks right now. This is something we need to solve as soon as possible.”
When asked for more details on Joelinton’s injury, Jaissle added: “Well, he will miss for sure the first weeks, but all details will be followed.”
Jaissle also confirmed that Joelinton would be Newcastle’s vice-captain for the 2026/27 season after the club confirmed that Dan Burn would be replacing Bruno Guimaraes as club captain. Joelinton was not part of the former leadership group at Newcastle but was specially selected by Jaissle to be the club’s new vice-captain.
“We made the decision [on Friday] and we announced that internally that Dan Burn is the captain representing the team and the club and Joelinton is the vice-captain,” Jaissle added. “All the other positions I will take my time as first of all, we are not that long here.
“As a coaching staff, I want to get to know the players much better. There's still the transfer window and then at one point there will also be a leadership group involved with more names.”
In addition to Joelinton and Burn, Jacob Murphy and Malick Thiaw have also captained Newcastle in pre-season while Jaissle hinted that Lewis Miley could be set for a more senior role in the side following his return from injury after three months out.
“Lewis Miley, for instance, he could be a guy who needs to step in these [leadership] roles without giving him too much pressure because he's just a young lad,” Jaissle continued. “We need to solve that collectively as long as there are no players with these characteristics.
