Middlesbrough receive another financial windfall as Djed Spence completes Tottenham exit
Djed Spence has joined Inter Milan from Tottenham
Middlesbrough have once again benefited from a sell-on fee clause after Djed Spence completed his move from Tottenham to Inter Milan on Saturday.
On the same day that Ashley Phillips also left Spurs to join Boro in an initial £7m deal, Spence’s move to the Serie A giants was confirmed.
And because Boro inserted a sell-on fee clause into the deal they agreed with Tottenham for the England full-back in 2022, Boro will be receiving some extra revenue as a result.
It’s not clear exactly how much, however, with reports differing on the exact among Inter Milan have paid Tottenham for the 26-year-old.Reports have ranged from £25m-£30m.
While it’s understood that Boro’s clause was for 15%, it’s also not certain whether that’s for the overall fee or the profit on a transfer that, with add-ons included, cost Spurs almost £20m.
On top of that, how much Boro gets right away will depend on how the agreed deal was structured, and what amount the Italians are paying right away.
Nevertheless, it’s another financial windfall for Boro, in a summer where their effective player trading in recent years has allowed them to flex some financial muscle in the Championship transfer market.
As well as selling Hayden Hackney to Everton - a deal which also includes a future sell-on clause - Boro profited from a world-record sell-on fee when Morgan Rogers joined Chelsea from Aston Villa.
As with that Rogers bonus money, however, not all of the 15% will come to Boro right away. Depending on how the deal is structured, the percentages are taken from each individual payment.
It's the second time this summer that Boro have profited from the sale of Spence four years ago. One of the performance-related add-ons was for making two competitive international starts - something Spence achieved at the World Cup. It's believed they received somewhere around £2m for that.
Spence’s move to Inter Milan comes off the back of his positive summer with England at the World Cup. He signs a five-year deal at the San Siro.
The 26-year-old made 43 appearances in all competitions for Tottenham last season and featured in all eight of England’s World Cup matches, including starts in the semi-final defeat to Argentina and the third-place play-off win against France.
