Italian Serie A club Genoa have entered the race to sign Super Eagles striker Tolu Arokodare from Wolverhampton Wanderers, setting up a transfer battle with fellow Italian side Fiorentina for the Nigerian forward, according to a report by Calciogenoa.
According to Italian newspaper Il Secolo XIX, Genoa have added Arokodare to their shortlist as they look to strengthen their attacking options ahead of the new season.
The club are assessing several strikers, with sporting director Diego Lopez leading the search for a new centre-forward, and the Nigerian has emerged as one of the leading candidates.
Arokodare joined Wolverhampton Wanderers from Belgian side Genk last summer but endured a difficult debut campaign in England.
He scored six goals across all competitions as Wolves suffered relegation from the Premier League to the Championship, leaving his future at Molineux uncertain.
Despite his struggles in England, the 25-year-old remains a highly regarded striker following his prolific spell at Genk, where he scored 41 goals in 113 appearances before securing his move to the Premier League.
That record has continued to attract interest from clubs across Europe.
Fiorentina have been strongly linked with the Nigeria international for several weeks and have already held talks with Wolves over a potential deal.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano recently reported that the Florence-based club submitted an improved proposal consisting of a loan with a €22 million buy option, while Arokodare is understood to be keen on a move to Serie A.
However, Genoa's emergence has added fresh competition to the race for the striker's signature.
With both Serie A clubs interested and Wolves expected to consider suitable offers, Arokodare's future is likely to remain one of the major transfer stories involving a Nigerian player during the current transfer window.
