Manchester United should speed up their pursuit of a new left-back after Luke Shaw’s underwhelming performance against AC Milan on Saturday. The Red Devils suffered a heavy 4-2 defeat to the Rossoneri in yesterday’s friendly. Shaw had a game to forget as Samuel Chukwueze got the better of him. The Nigerian ace constantly got behind the United left-back, and he was the standout performer for the Serie A heavyweights with one goal and two assists. Shaw, signed for £27 million in 2014, has been United’s undisputed left-back under manager Michael Carrick, but the recent showing suggests that the club need a solid competitor. The 31-year-old did not win a single ground duel against Milan yesterday (0/3) and was also dribbled past twice. He failed to cope with Milan’s right wing-back Chukwueze. Patrick Dorgu, who has exclusively played as a left winger in pre-season, is an option to deputise for Shaw, but the Dane has had defensive shortcomings too. Hence, the Red Devils should enter the transfer market for a left-back, given Harry Amass is not deemed ready. He could be sold to a Championship side soon. Newcastle United’s Lewis Hall has been a primary target, but a deal could be difficult to pursue, now that the Magpies have already had a huge summer selling spree. They have parted ways with Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali and captain Bruno Guimaraes, and could resist selling the young Englishman before the deadline. If United were to pursue an alternative, Club Brugge’s Joaquin Seys would be an exciting option, having made superb progress with the reigning Belgian champions. Seys notched up 13 goal contributions in the previous campaign. His attacking and solid defensive attributes mean he would provide good competition to Shaw. The 21-year-old could be signed for £30m. Another option could be Racing Santander’s Jorge Salinas. The 19-year-old is in demand, with Barcelona being his preferred destination. He could be prised away for his £13.7m release clause, but is inexperienced at the top level. A Premier League alternative could be Fulham’s Antonee Robinson, who has been on United’s radar. The 29-year-old was previously valued at £25m, but the price tag could now be higher with the transfer deadline approaching. Carrick has clearly stated that the club need more quality signings before the transfer window concludes. A new left-back appears a must, considering Shaw is already 31 and has an injury record.
