Sheffield United respond to Sassuolo 'bid' for ex-Rotherham United loanee Femi Seriki
Sheffield United have reportedly responded to a bid for defender Femi Seriki
Sheffield United have reportedly rejected a loan-to-buy bid from Sassuolo for defender Femi Seriki.
The right-back joined the Blades from Bury in 2019 and has since made 70 appearances for the club at first-team level.
He was loaned out on a number of occasions while cutting his teeth, spending time with Beerschot, Boston United, Rochdale and Rotherham United.
The 25-year-old is now established in Chris Wilder’s senior set-up, but his growth looks to have attracted attention.
Sheffield United ‘reject’ Femi Seriki bid
Sky Sports have claimed a loan-to-buy bid from Serie A outfit Sassuolo has been knocked back by Sheffield United.
The proposed deal is said to have teed up the option of a £5m move to Italy upon the conclusion of Seriki’s loan spell.
It remains to be seen whether Sassuolo will go back in for the defender, who has seen competition for minutes at right-back intensified by the arrival of Matt Doherty on a free transfer from Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Sassuolo recently saw their coffers boosted by Leeds United, who paid a hefty £34m fee to prise defender Tarik Muharemović from the Italian outfit. 50 per cent of that fee, however, is said to have gone to the centre-back’s former employers Juventus.
Sheffield United’s delicate balance
Sheffield United will be reluctant to part with important players, but tough decisions may need to be made following the loss of parachute payments.
In February, the club’s chief executive Stephen Bettis warned: “We won't be selling players to bring in cash [but] we may have to sell players to reduce the wage bill to meet the requirements.
“In the last seven or eight years, we've never had to worry about breaching those rules. We've never been the highest payers in the Championship and we're always one of the lowest in the Premier League but still, there will need to be an adjustment for us.”
