Burnley v West Ham: Team news, predicted teams and TV details ahead of Championship opener
Everything you need to know ahead of Burnley’s league opener against West Ham
Burnley kick off their 2026/27 Championship campaign later today with a mouthwatering season opener against West Ham.
The two relegated sides do battle at Turf Moor as Nicky Hayen’s men look to get their league campaign off to a strong start against the title favourites.
To get off to a victorious start, the Clarets will have to do something they’ve not done at Turf Moor in over 300 days: win a league fixture.
Here’s all the important information ahead of today’s fixture:
When and where is the game taking place?
The match is being held at Burnley’s Turf Moor Stadium on Sunday, August 16. Kick off is at 4pm.
Is it on TV?
Yes, the game is available to view on Sky Sports.
How else can I follow the game?
Burnley FC writer Matt Scrafton will be providing live updates on his X feed, followed by a match report, post-match reaction and further analysis on the Burnley Express’ website.

What’s the latest team news?
The Clarets have no fresh injury concerns to contend with ahead of their league opener, although they do have a handful of players out with longer-term concerns.
Jordan Beyer, Josh Cullen, Enock Agyei and Jaydon Banel are all unavailable, as if Ashley Barnes.
As for West Ham, Keiber Lamadrid is a doubt after picking up a knee issue in pre-season and Tomas Soucek will miss out after injuring his ankle playing for Czechia at the World Cup.
Nicky Hayen’s pre-match comments
“I expect West Ham to continue to play how they play. They have the same manager, yes they change a lot of players, but the playing style won't change.
“Of course, they are one of the favourites or maybe the biggest favourites for the title this year. But it's nice to play against them at the first game because no one is at the moment 100 per cent ready to start the league. You still are busy with implementing some things.
“It's for us, but also for them because they also have to implement new players, but that's what will be really exciting on Sunday.”
What are the predicted teams?
Burnley: Weiss, Roberts, Walker, Worrall, Humphreys, Raghouber, Hannibal, Ramsey, Edwards, Bruun Larsen, Flemming
West Ham: Hermansen, Scarles, Mavropanos, Kilman, Walker-Peters, Kante, Alvarez, Bowen, Solomon, Pablo
Who is the referee?
Josh Smith. He took charge of 33 games, handing out 115 yellow cards - at an average of 3.4 per game - and eight reds. Smith was rewarded with the League One play-off final at the end of last season as Bolton Wanderers clinched promotion with a 4-1 win over Stockport County at Wembley. This will be the first Burnley game Smith has taken charge of since January 2025, when he oversaw the goalless draw with Leeds United at Turf Moor.
What are the latest odds?
Burnley: 9/5
Draw: 13/5
West Ham: 13/10
