Everything you need to know about Gvidas Gineitis as Champions League winner raves about Celtic transfer target
Interest has reportedly ramped up from Glasgow's east end in the Lithuania cap
Torino star Gvidas Gineitis looks to be back on the Celtic shopping list with Arne Engels inching towards the Parkhead exit. West Ham have ramped up their interest in the Belgian international this week with a bid being knocked back by the Glasgow giants. Gineitis was considered by the Hoops when Nottingham Forest had a £25million bid turfed out back in January, links to the the Lithuania international have resurfaced. But who is he, and what does he bring? Record Sport takes a look.
- What age is Gvidas Gineitis? He is 22, but has plenty of top level experience. He made his Torino first-team debut with a surprise start against Milan in 2023, and was just 18 at the time. As a teenager, he came to Italy in August 2020 from the SPAL youth academy.
- Why was he given a chance so young? His boss at the time Ivan Juric explained: “He is an interesting talent and the only left-footed midfielder in the entire squad."
- How tall is he? The midfielder stands at just over 6ft 3' tall - and is hard to miss in Torino's midfield engine room.
- What are his best attributes? Versatility. The Lithuania international isn't tied down to one position - though predominately plays as a defensive midfielder.
- He said: "In modern football, you have to be able to play any role. Last season I had to play as an attacking midfielder. I'm just ready and if the coach tells me to play as an attacking midfielder, I'll play there. The ability to adapt is a big part of modern football. I can play between winger and attacking midfielder. Do I have any preferences? I prefer to be a defensive midfielder."
- What do Lithuania think of him? He is the rising star of Lithuanian football - kicked on after being named the countries young player of the year back in 2022. Boss Edgaras Jankauskas said: "I am pleased to see his progress. He is one that other players will study in textbooks."
- What have Torino said? Before his summer departure, former boss Roberto D'Aversa challenged Gineitis to go on and become a top player.
- He said: "He's a midfielder, but he could also be considered an attacking midfielder. Not to play with his back to goal, but to exploit crosses. He's got structure, he can be dangerous. He's scored three goals so far, but he's a player who can score seven or eight goals a season . It's up to him to prove he can be a top player."
- How much do Torino want? Reports in Italy suggest that bidding starts at £9million for the rising talent - so Celtic would have to meet a high asking price.
- What has Gvidas Gineitis said about his future? He is playing his cards close to his chest, stating before the summer window: "I don't look to the future. I just work every day. We'll see what happens after each year. When I was a kid, I just dreamed of playing football professionally. Now that's what I do."
- What has his agent said? Dmitry Vinokurov has been more open - admitting his client is ready to move. He said: “Torino holds Gvidas in high regard and believes in his future. The player has steadily improved within the club and is considered an important part of the project."
- He added: “At the same time, Gvidas is ambitious, as any player competing at this level should be. There have already been expressions of interest from other clubs, which is natural considering his age, performance, and potential. If an interesting offer were to arrive for both Torino and Gvidas, it would certainly be carefully evaluated.”
