Celtic have been in touch with the representatives of Torino midfielder Gvidas Gineitis, although no formal offer has been made.
Speaking exclusively to CeltsAreHere, the 22-year-old’s agent, Dmitry Vinokurov, confirmed that contact has taken place over the Lithuania international.
“Yes, people from Celtic have been in contact with me, but there was no offer yet,” he said.
“I appreciate their effort and am ready to cooperate, but I also have to keep working on other options for Gvidas.”
Vinokurov denied that was the case.
“This information started with saying that there had been an offer before and it was not good enough. That’s not true,” he said.
Celtic’s interest is real, but talks have not yet reached the stage of a formal bid.
The Hoops appear to be doing the early work on a possible move while waiting to see how their midfield looks later in the window.
Arne Engels’ future could be important.
There is a belief that Celtic may wait for movement around the Belgian before deciding whether to make an offer for Gineitis.
That would allow the club to prepare for a possible departure without committing to another midfielder too early.
There is also encouragement from the player’s side.
Vinokurov confirmed that Gineitis would be open to hearing what Celtic have to offer.
“Gvidas also appreciates the interest from such a big club and is ready to see the offer,” he said.
That means Celtic would receive a positive response if they decide to take the next step.
However, they may not have the situation to themselves.
Other clubs have also made contact over Gineitis, although Vinokurov did not name them.
Celtic have spoken to the player’s representatives, Gineitis is open to the move, but Torino have not received an official bid.
The next step rests with Celtic and could depend on what happens with Engels before the transfer window closes.
