After back-to-back offensive outbursts, the Pittsburgh Pirates couldn’t solve Sonny Gray and the Boston Red Sox. Gray tossed seven scoreless innings, Wilyer Abreu hit a solo home run and Andruw Monasterio added a two-run double in a three-run ninth for a 4-0 win Saturday night before a sellout crowd of 38,408 at PNC Park. It marked the 13th shutout loss for the Pirates (60-65), who had scored a combined 21 runs in wins over the Miami Marlins (13-1) and Red Sox (8-4) the previous two days. Gray (15-3) had seven strikeouts while allowing six hits and one walk, but the Pirates couldn’t score against the 36-year-old right-hander, who threw 56 of 86 pitches for strikes and lowered his ERA to 2.65 over 23 starts this season. Pirates righty Jared Jones (2-5) allowed one run on four hits and two walks with seven strikeouts over five innings. Jones struck out three of the first four batters he faced before Abreu sent his 96.8-mph fastball 420 feet and over the Clemente Wall to give the Red Sox a 1-0 lead. Caleb Durbin followed with a single to right, but Jones picked him off with a throw to first baseman Spencer Horwitz, then got Jarren Duran to go down swinging to end the frame. Abreu went 3 for 4 with two doubles and a homer. In the third inning, Nick Sogard drew a walk, and Masataka Yoshida doubled to the right-field corner to put a pair of runners in scoring position. Yoshida was removed after feeling left hamstring tightness while running to second base and was replaced by pinch runner Anthony Seigler. But Jones recovered to get Ceddanne Rafaela swinging on a 98.5-mph fastball and Adley Rutschman on a slider to end a third consecutive inning with a strikeout. Jones got into more trouble in the fourth, when Willson Contreras drew a leadoff walk and Abreu roped a double down the right-field line. But Jones got Durbin to ground out to short, struck out Duran on a full-count fastball and won a 10-pitch battle with Monasterio by getting him to fly out to left to strand both runners. The Pirates finally staged a rally in the fifth, loading the bases when Jake Mangum singled to right, Rafael Flores Jr. hit a dribbler to short that Monasterio whiffed on and Horwitz drew a four-pitch walk. But Gray got Brandon Lowe swinging at a sweeper in the dirt to end it. The Red Sox threatened to score in the eighth, when Rafaela hit a sharp grounder down the right-field line for a double. Ronny Simon misplayed the ball for an error that allowed it to roll to the corner, and Rafaela to reach third. But Gregory Soto got Rutschman to ground out to short and Contreras to fly out to center to prevent a run from scoring. Luke Weaver surrendered three runs on four hits in the ninth, his third appearance for the Pirates since being acquired from the New York Mets at the trade deadline. Abreu crushed a changeup 402 feet off the center field wall for a leadoff double in the ninth, only for Weaver to field Durbin’s bunt and throw off his back foot to get Abreu out at third. After Duran dropped a flare into shallow left for a single, Monasterio doubled to the North Side Notch to score both runners to give the Red Sox a 3-0 lead. Jahmai Jones hit a two-out single to left to score Monasterio to make it 4-0.
