The Wolves’ Travel Distances

The Wolves are on the verge of kicking off their first Bundesliga 2 campaign since 1996/97. For VfL fans, that not only means plenty of “new” opponents and stadiums, but also significantly shorter journeys. Compared to last season in the Bundesliga, they will save roughly the equivalent of the distance from Wolfsburg to the North Cape.
Three Lower Saxony rivals
For years, the Wolves were the only club from Lower Saxony competing in the Bundesliga. In Bundesliga 2, they will be joined by three fellow Lower Saxony sides: Eintracht Braunschweig, Hannover 96 and VfL Osnabrück.
At just 37 kilometres one way, Braunschweig replaces FC St. Pauli as the closest away trip, with St. Pauli having been the nearest destination last season at 165 kilometres. The longest journey is no longer to SC Freiburg’s Europa-Park Stadion, 613 kilometres away, but to 1. FC Heidenheim. The distance from the Volkswagen Arena to the Voith-Arena is 530 kilometres.
More than 3,000 kilometres fewer
Adding together the return journeys from the Volkswagen Arena to the stadiums of all 17 Bundesliga 2 opponents results in a total travel distance of 9,968 kilometres. That is 3,052 kilometres fewer than in the 2025/26 Bundesliga season. On average, travelling VfL fans will therefore cover 586 kilometres for each away match.
Even before the season gets under way, one thing should be said: Respect to all the away supporters!
