The 29-year-old WBC featherweight champion was honored with a parade down Sutter Avenue as part of “Shu Shu” Carrington Day in the Brownsville section of the borough, the neighborhood in which Carrington grew up. Hundreds of people lined the street as a waving Carrington went by on float. He ended up in a ring set up outdoors, where he was greeted by local legends Mike Tyson, Zab Judah, Daniel Jacobs, and Riddick Bowe. Carrington was overwhelmed with emotion. “I loved the parade, and I’m so appreciative of all the love and support that everyone’s giving me,” he told The Ring. "It’s amazing to have so many former great fighters from my city show up and support me. I’m gonna enjoy this moment, but the rest of the champions know I’m coming for them.” Yes, Carrington (18-0, 10 KOs) took the opportunity to talk about his plans. He won the vacant WBC title by stopping Carlos Castro in the ninth round on January 31 in New York, his first major championship. He then easily outpointed Rene Palacios in his first defense on July 4 in Cleveland. Who’s next? That’s difficult to say. Carrington, ranked No. 2 by The Ring, has long believed that the 126-pound division’s belt holders had no interest in facing him before he beat Castro. And he suspects nothing has changed. Still, he has his hit list. Brandon Figueroa, ranked No. 4 by The Ring and the division’s WBA belt holder, is an appealing fight for Carrington. So is Rafael Espinoza, The Ring’s No. 1 featherweight and WBO champion. However, one potential opponent stands out to him: IBF titleholder Angelo Leo, who is ranked No. 3 by The Ring. Leo (26-1, 12 KOs) hasn’t fought since scoring a majority decision victory over Tomoki Kameda in May of last year. He was supposed to defend his belt against Ra’eese Aleem in May, but the bout was canceled after Aleem missed weight by 2.8 pounds. Carrington likes the matchup with Leo because both need a big-name dance partner. “Me and Angelo Leo makes so much sense,” he said. “It makes too much sense, honestly. He doesn't have a fight lined up, and neither do I. So why can't we unify? That's the fight that should be happening next. Come on Leo, let’s make it happen.” Of course, Carrington would be happy to face any of the belt holders. And he’s thinking big in terms of his long range future. “I really want to become the first undisputed featherweight champion in the four-belt era,” he said.
