Arne Engels has completed his £22 million move to West Ham United, with the Belgian midfielder leaving Celtic after just under two years in Glasgow. He has penned a five-year deal with the Hammers, with the option of a further year. A move had been on the cards since the turn of the year, with Nottingham Forest failing in a deadline-day pursuit after having a number of bids knocked back. Engels ended his final Celtic game last weekend with an assist for Kasper Høgh’s opener, and his Celtic legacy includes two domestic doubles in two seasons, Champions League knockout football in his first campaign and Europa League knockout football in his second. The Belgian really came into his own under Martin O’Neill and will now hope to play a major part for West Ham in the English Championship as they look to secure promotion back to the Premier League at the first time of asking. The fee is believed to be a Championship record, showing just how highly West Ham rated Engels. Celtic will now hope they can replace him properly this summer, with Niko Sigur, Gvidas Gineitis and Miguel Chaiwa all believed to be targets. Sigur is reportedly the frontrunner. It remains to be seen whether Celtic will sign a replacement before Tuesday night’s deadline ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League play-off first leg against LASK. Gineitis is the only one of those targets currently eligible to feature, with Torino not involved in European qualifiers.
