John Eustace says his side need to ‘build as much chemistry as possible’ after his side were edged out 2-1 in the Sky Bet Championship at Charlton Athletic on Saturday.
Sam Szmodics was on the scoresheet once more for the Rams – netting for the second match in a row – to take the lead in the first half. But two goals in the second 45 for the hosts saw the point go the way of Charlton.
Defender Charlie Taylor made his first league start, while most recent recruit Alex Mowatt played 36 minutes on debut. The Rams Head Coach admitted
Eustace spoke to RamsTV after the final whistle.
The attitude of the boys today was excellent. I'm bitterly disappointed we lost the game. I didn't think there was anything in the game, really. So, to come away with a 2-1 defeat is a tough one to take. I think there are positives, but there is also a lot of hard work ahead for sure.
It's another game we scored in. When we went 2-1 down, we certainly were a threat again and that never-say-die attitude was there for sure.
We've got a group where that's probably the first time they've played together, and it's just important that we try and create as much chemistry as possible now. We've got to adapt to players being injured as well, so we've got to get the right players in now to help us on our journey.
We want to improve from last year, and we want to keep building a really competitive team, and I know the club are working their socks off in the background to do that.
Sam is a top performer in the Championship, so we brought him in to score us lots of goals, and just before in the warm-up he did have a slight thigh strain as well, so to get an hour out of him was really pleasing, and the way he took his goal was sensational.
I'm delighted to bring him in. He's a top performer in the Championship; he's going to help us control games, and with his experience he's certainly going to help other players as well.
Craig Forsyth also spoke with RamsTV following the match – which saw the veteran defender notch his 406th appearance and climb to joint-12th in the all-time appearance charts for the club.
Forsyth gave an honest assessment of the contest at The Valley.
Disappointing to lose from the position we were in at half-time, but ultimately, it's come down to poor defending in the second half, and it's something that we definitely need to cut out and get out of our system as soon as possible.
It takes everybody a bit of time to get into the rhythm, but we don't have time for that. We need to get on with it and get cracking.
Sam is a quality player and a great finisher as you can see, so hopefully there's more of that to come, and he can get on a run early on in the season and keep him coming.
There's a lot of Championship experience in the changing room, and I think you need it at times throughout the season, so I'm sure everybody that's got that experience will be needed in there.
We wanted to get off to a good start; we haven't done that, so it's now about putting in the work on the training ground to put that right at home on Saturday.
