‘Thank you’: Abu Kamara’s message to Portsmouth faithful after Fratton show of affection
Abu Kamara thanked Pompey supporters for their show of love on his Fratton return.
And the returning Blues favourite expressed his disappointment at not being able to give fans the win he believed they deserved, after welcoming the League One title winner back to PO4.
Kamara’s homecoming ended in frustration, following the 3-1 opening-day defeat to QPR in front of a crowd of 20,479 today.
Terry Devlin’s opener was cancelled out by three goals in 14 minutes, in the winger’s first Blues outing since completing a £2.5m return from Hull City.
Kamara has been inundated with Pompey fans showing him appreciation on social media, with that developing into the warmest of welcomes at Fratton Park.
That made for a special day for the Londoner, who was blown away by the reception he’s been given by supporters.
Kamara told The News: ‘There’s been non-stop messages on social media, on TikTok and Instagram posts
‘So I always knew the love was there and I’m so happy to be back here where they support me like they do, I’m so thankful.
‘The welcome today was crazy coming to the ground and when I stepped on the pitch and my name was announced.
‘The cheers and love they gave me put a smile on my face, I’m just disappointed we couldn’t give them the win they deserved.
‘I’m maybe not the most talkative person, but when I’m comfortable people get to see more of my personality. That’s what I get from being here, I’m really comfortable and happy here.’
The QPR loss punctured the feelgood factor around Fratton Park which was generated going into the game, with hopes high after a busy summer of optimism.
The outcome left fans flat, especially with Pompey taking the lead and having the chances to be further ahead before the Londoners came back into the game.
There was further openings after the restart, before John Mousinho’s men fell to their first opening-day loss since 2019.
Kamara was keeping the loss in context, however, as he assured supporters there will be the kind of spirited response required.
He added: ‘It’s the first game and disappointing, but there’s 45 more games to go. I can promise the supporters we’re going into each game fighting.’
